No, Rossi did not run a 20:25. His PR is close to 22 minutes. That's about right for his legit times at other distances. It's also about what he ran at a 5K in Philly a few weeks ago. Rossi is a not total running newb at this point. He's been running and doing races for a couple of years. He is going to drop his 5K PR by ~90 seconds in a few weeks.
Also, look at the course map. Very simple to cheat. Easier than LVM. It is a 2.8 mile loop and then the last ~quarter mile is an exact repeat of the first quarter mile.
All he had to do was nonchalantly walk across the starting line at the very back of the pack (which is gun/chip time discrepancy supports). He could be wearing a jacket over his bib, no one would pay any attention or even know he was in the race. Then amble over to the side of the road somewhere between the start and finish lines, remove jacket at some point and after the appropriate amount of time went by, slip back into the race and finish with a sub-20.
Problem is, our boy Rossi is not too bright. He miscalculated the time and got a +20 minute finish. He didn't realize that at first, which is why he had the initial tweet, "Results coming soon...". He thought it was building suspense for his big sub-20 reveal. Then once the results were posted he realized he f-ed up so that tweet was deleted. He read this thread, saw that we were onto him due to the chip/gun time thing and makes up some "shoe malfunction" story in which he outs himself again as a cheater by claiming he was "making up time", which he wouldn't need to do given it was chip timed.
And, seriously, if you were accused of cheating at a race and as a result someone offered you 10,000 dollars to break 20 minutes at a 5K and unlike Rossi, you actually could do this... wouldn't you make sure that there was ample, ample evidence of your accomplishment this time?
Again, SERIOUSLY, this the guy who had someone shoot video of him all over the Boston Marathon course to make his little ego-stroke video. Yet, when he had a chance to win $10,000, he can't offer a scrap of proof that he completed the race other than the "well, I've got a finish time in the results. Here's a picture of took of the finish line that doesn't even show me. He's a picture of the starting corral that doesn't even show me. DERP." We know he's used a GPS device in the past. We know he ran the Philly 5K clutching his cell phone in his hand like it was his PRECIOUS. So, it wouldn't be hard for Mike Rossi to offer some proof that he actually ran 20:25 yesterday except for the little, inconvenient fact that HE DIDN'T RUN 20:25 yesterday.
