Not trolling here, but most of you know that.
Mike could probably run his BQ time with 12 months of solid mileage and say 50-70 mpw marathon plan targeting the race. He is basically running low miles then ramping up for a 16-18 wks. Those 10-20mpw are now allowing him to get the base for him to actually develop in the off season(s).
There is not a thing wrong with 10-20mpw for fitness and health. But you can't expect to run a good marathon on it.
12 months and 9 of those at 40mpw+ and he could get that BQ without cheating.
And if Mike is reading (I know you are) I sincerely mean all this.
I agree with you. I was little worried he'd train and get in better shape in 2016 and thus run 3:25 - that's why I only offered $10,000. The first time I showed the article to my brother, he said, "But couldn't he just train and do it." Yes, it's conceivable but I figured unlikely.
He clearly wasn't in anything close to sub 3:25 shape last year. If he'd run 3:24 or something, maybe I would have believe it was possible as his other times indicated maybe a 3:30 low. But i figured that was based off his 5k times and what not and he'd have to do more training to do it for the marathon.
In hindsight it was kind of stupid to offer the $10k. I should have just made the eyecatching 3:11 $100,000. Can you imagine if I offered a Kenya $10,000 to run within 14 minutes of his marathon PB? They'd do it within a week.
