going the way of webb?? He ran 1:47.7/3:53.43/8:45i in high school and 1:43.8/3:46.91/8:11/13:10/27:35 as a pro. I don't think anyone would be upset if Cain went on to run 1:55/3:56-57.
I was not taking such a strict literal interpretation of that. I was talking about how 15 years ago everyone was talking about how he was the greatest HS miler of all-time and that he would likely be running 3:49 as a college freshman, etc.
If you look at someone like Jim Ryun, he had a LOT of sub-3:55 miles after HS, and his career was very short compared to today (he also struggled a lot of times). He improved quite a lot after HS. Same with Steve Scott. He had like 40 mile races under 3:53.
Webb did not. He also struggled with making Championship teams and doing well in Championships. Jim Spivey made more teams and won more titles that matter and he ran 1:50y / 4:06y in HS.
Sure, Webb ran 1:43/3:47/3:30/13:10/27:35 but he only had two races at 5k/10k that were worthy of his talent and a few races at 800/1000. He also never wanted for anything at any age, he started his pro career at age 20 making $250,000 a year.
This is how Cain will be. Every year we will wonder if she will fulfill the promise of a HS miler that was 10 SECONDS faster than everyone ever before her.
If you don't see it that way, that is cool. One of us will be right.
That is what
