He looks like a complete bum. Perhaps if he'd shave and clean up, look sharp and keep doing what he's doing, he might attract some local sponsors that want to support his dream, but he looks horrible.

I was in Flag in April, and I was doing a long run on A1 Mountain Road. I saw Xavier running by himself. We did a quick head nod and "morning," and he was gone. When I got back to the start, I saw his van overflowing with stuff. I don't know if I'd want to live that way, but it sounds like it's working for him.

This dude is awesome. He knows himself, which is something many people go to their graves not being able to claim.
I wish him well on his journey. And if I'm ever through Flag I'd love to go on a run with him.
Rudy!, Rudy!

Oddly enough this is becoming a trend with a lot of millenials. We are the unattached generation, never getting married, never staying in the same place for long periods of time. This guy is just a more extreme version of the rest of us.
I know a couple in their 20s who made the decision to travel the country and live out of a van full-time. Both college graduates, both from upper middle class backgrounds. They shower at YMCAs, spend what would be their rent money on eating at nice restaurants on a regular basis, and use a converted mattress inside the van as their bed. They make a point to only use the van as a place to drive and sleep, forcing them to constantly be out doing the things they love. I have to say, they seem very happy.
I would be happy too if the money to eat at fancy restaurants magically rained down from the sky without my having to work for it.
Can we stop using people who don't have to work for anything in their lives as an example of ... well, anything?
Also, no one is "unattached". They're "detached". They've said "f*** you" to anyone that they could be helping or caring about. Hilariously, millennials complain that older generations are selfish.
This chaps times are not bad. With a bit of high altitude he could make the grade.
dudes too chunky and has no speed. go get a job bruh
I ran 1:08 with a job and at sea level training lol
Maybe if he has run a minute faster in 10K. From low 30s to low 28s is 5 secs/lap. That is a tall order. He is probably better trying to get a qualifying time for the marathon trials.
The money doesn't magically appear, they both have part-time jobs. Obviously they don't need to work full time with rent, but not everyone who chooses a carefree, nomadic lifestyle is just lazy.
The couple I described have healthy relationships with their friends, family, and each other. And in the case of this Flagstaff guy, it sounds like he's actually being MORE social as a result of his free time. Detachment is not the right word to describe this way of living.
He should pursue ultra running, much better chance of getting paid.
What do ye not get?He is progressing nicely as a runner and this altitude training will only drop his times further.I was also at this stage in progression prior to breaking the half marathon AR.I even ran 2hrs 12 in the full while not fully prepared.Did some of ye posters think i always ran these times?Of course i didn't.People don't seem to grasp the word 'progression. All athletes need to go through the phase. It doesn't appear by magic.
It appears from his Instagram he's been working at Best Buy for the 8 months or so he's been in Flagstaff.
Its not a "millennial" type of thing to do, I'm a millennial as well as most of my friends and we have a term for these type of people, "trust fund babies".

Down by the river?
Negative. There are no rivers in Flagstaff.
Yeah this is correct. I'm a personal friend of his you've got it right. Got his degree to teach, went to do student teaching, hated it, and then followed his dream of running and living free. Go X!!

Nice assumption. You know this guy?
Vans are for vagrants.
Sort of liked this guy, then read his instagram where he thinks 9/11 was an inside job.
I'm a 'reasonable people can disagree' kind of guy, but anyone who thinks 9/11 was an inside job is an idiot.
