28:32 is quite good for a HSer.

So few high schoolers run 10000 AND it is a excellent record so it will probably last along time.
Which do you think goes first Chapa's 39 year record or Jim Ryun's 49 year high school record?
Both will probably be broken by immigrants or children of immigrants from Kenya who become USA citizens.

Ummm ever heard of Alan Webb?
Sileshi Sihine and Tirunesh Dibaba's son will break the record easy. Does anyone know why he took his father's first name instead of his last name? You'd be crazy not to think he will be a genetic freak. Rojo, why didn't this receive more press? A child produced by two athletes of the greatest distance runners of all time is unheard of.

That is how they do it name wise in Ethiopia, Sileshi Sihine's father's name would be Sihine, Tirunesh Dibaba's father's name would be Dibaba, Meseret Defar's fathers first name would be Defar. Ethiopians have 3 names, example Tirunesh Dibaba's full name is Tirunesh Dibaba Kenenei and Meseret Defar's full name is Meseret Defar Tola, they use their fathers name for the media, Kenenei would be T and E and G Dibaba's grandfathers first name, Tola would be Meseret Defar's grandfather's first name.

In other words... it will be another 21 years before Chapa's gets a scare ;-)

You mean Jim Ryun's "High School Only Race" mile record??? - 3:59.0????
(is that even right?)
Yes, Chapa's record will easily go down by some Kenyan or Ethiopian transplant. If you thought King Ches was fast in HS - there's an army of hungry dudes coming who will easily own it. But what is the HS Record for the 10,000 in a US HS only race? Tom Hunt???? Seldom run, so.....

OOPs, I meant Ryun's American junior record in the 800, Ryun also has the American junior records at 1500, mile and 2 mile
All of Ryun's American junior records are 49 years old.

Not crazy, just not ignorant of how genetics works.
I'm proud to say that I was there, that day, in '76, in the rain.
My good friend Ed Mendoza won the race.
Eddie told me, later, that one of the things that motivated him, to win, was the Drake announcer, Jim Duncan, talking about "high schooler Rudy Chapa", all through the race!
Interesting.
Nathan, Nathan, Nathan. You need to read up on basic concepts like regression toward the mean.

It was the World Junior record until around 1990. I recall Galen Rupp taking a shot at it his senior year and running around 29:10.
It probably won't be broken because high school coaches today don't let their top kids run 10,000 meter track races.
Mark Johnson of Wisconsin. I always wondered where he ran 28:25 which was the Wisconsin school record that lasted 30 plus years at a top distance program.
Great photos! Rudy was soooo smooth.

Yes, avoiding losing to a high schooler, would/should motivate those collegians/open runners!!!
BTW, really nice pictures!
Rudy was probably the most impressive runner I have ever seen. Back in 1978 there was no doubt that he was the next truly great American runner, not Al Salazar or Billy McChesney. He was so fluid and smooth--you really didn't see a limit on him. Then injuries.

STORY FROM 2003
One hundred years, one race
Rudy Chapa’s 10,000 record Indiana’s
outstanding performance of all time!
by Jim Brandyberry
At the end of the first 100 years of Indiana high school boys track and field, it is compelling to look back across a century of competition. Searching for the outstanding individual performance of those ten decades, one mark stands out from among the rest: The national high school 10,000 meter record of 28:32.7 by Hammonds Rudy Chapa.
The scene was a moist but favorably cool April 24, 1976, at the Drake Relays, surrounded by college and post-collegiate runners. Going into it, I knew it was my last shot of reaching the automatic qualifying time [28:40] for the Olympic trials. My strategy was to stay with the leaders as long as I could, Rudy recalled in a 2002 inter-view. I remember just feeling wonderful, under control, comfortable. Everything was perfect.
Perfect was the result! The splits indicate something of the magnitude of his effort: 9:07 for the first two miles, three miles in 13:41 and four miles in 18:16. He established a national high school record for six miles at 27:36 en route! Those splits beg to be further analyzed: Three consecutive two mile runs in 9:07, 9:09 and 9:20 with a sprint afterwards. No rest in between! Or, look at it this way: Two 14:16 5000 meter races back to back. That’s sick! His teenage distance prodigy son Joaquin exclaimed recently in admiration.
Even more, it was a world junior record (for athletes under age 20 in a given year of competition) and remained so until 1991. Needless to say, it still stands as a national high school standard, breaking the former record by over 21 seconds.
Though possessing considerable natural ability, Chapa also put in the miles. It is hard to overestimate the amount of work we did, he reflected on his days at Hammond High School. 100 to 130 miles and more per week was common. No wonder two other teammates also broke 9:00 for two miles with him his junior year!
When he went to the storied University of Oregon distance running program, his mileage dropped by over 50%! With such employers as Nike since college, Rudy spent years around world class distance runners. Yet, he could compare, only three or four people that I've met trained harder than we did.
Chapa was not done, though. He went on to become an NCAA champion in the 5000 meters and broke the legendary Steve Prefontaine’s American record at 3000 meters.
Now with his own investment business in Portland, Oregon, Rudy Chapa was, over the last century of Hoosier high school track and field, Indiana’s Best.
