I strongly believe that the runner has the responsibility of knowing the course.
In my first ever cross country conference championship in Memphis, in 1987, the course was extremely poorly marked, and I went off-course. I DQed myself because I didnt want any other runner to lose even once place due to my mistake.
In the case of this woman, her major error was accepting a ride back to the course. Even if she ended up running 35 miles, she would have a reason to file a complaint against race management, but by accepting a ride back to the course, I believe that she morally waived that right.
