Matthew Maton runs 3:42.54 1500!

How many letsrunners do not remember any athlete significantly slowing down or falling down/tripped up in the last 100m of a mile race?

Do you really think that age maters so much? I feel like it doesn't take too much away from the performance, the big difference in my eyes is that it was done in a pro/college race. Once you get to college everyone is training hard and as long as you're not starting school at like past 20 I think its a non-issue.

Maton is a year older, but at this juncture is three seconds faster. Hopefully it gets settled out at Pre.

Highly doubt Fisher will run Pre because it is same weekend as Michigan state meet.

They could match up at the Dream Mile two weeks later.

If you're comparing PBs, Maton (converted) is only 1.7 seconds better than Fisher's 4:02.02 from Dream '14, (where, of course, he beat Maton).

Maton will get faster in College Great coaching and Fisher will get slower in College Terrible coaching at Stanford.

That is a significant difference. Much like Ches's age difference throughout high school and now in college. Age alone can have a significant impact at the elite level. Thus results are tainted.

I agree not quite as impressive as if he were newly 18. High school records etc. have age limits if he is under he is under. By the same token you can take to 18yr olds on one can be much more physically mature than the other. Folks reach puberty at different times etc. Also a big difference training with an racing against high school kids, and how the training/competition jumps when you hit college (He wouldn't have run that time in the high school division i suspect.) If he were 18 yrs and 7 months would that be okay for you? (That would be in the normal age bounds for high school seniors

Terrible coaching? Coach Milt at Stanford has done a great job with the program and he has only been there a couple of years. 2nd this year at cross country nationals against a Colorado team that was somewhat unbeatable. Also he has developed Sean McGorty very well and I could see a similar trajectory for Grant Fisher under him.

However, if he's already 19, he shouldn't count for high school. That's ridiculous. Too old. German Fernandez was 17 when he ran his HS bests right after graduation.

Stanford Men's XC had been the most under-performing team in the NCAA under Miltenberg.

He didn't run 3:22.54

If he had, that would have converted to well under 4.

Having said that, I know a lot about the mile.

Two of my male athletes and one of my young ladies were all-conference middle distance runners last year alone.

Beyond that, I ran it the mile in high school and was a varsity letterman 2 years in a row.

I also scored 710 on my math SAT, and tested out of my freshman college calc class, so even though I am no Archimedes, and didn't major in math or science, I am competent enough to handle "elementary school math," and TRUST ME, 3:42.54 for 1500 converts to a sub 4 mile.

I know what I'm talking about.

No it doesn't. The universal World Track accepted conversion for Maton's mark is 4:00.35

You don't convert by "figuring" in what a person might have run. Remember, they already sprinted in to the finish, so the conversion time takes into account what the runner's average pace was for the entire race, and also usually adds in a fatigue factor for the extra distance having to be run.
