Agree totally. The OP might as well stop for lunch.

It is a damn shame Jock Semple isn't here to answer OP's question.

He will not be allowed to bring a camelback water pack on the bus to the start. The race has banned them due to the 2013 bombing. Brooks shorts have great side pockets and with the front key pocket you can easily carry 4-5 gels. Boston will allow you to bring a 1 liter bottle of sports drink on the bus with you (if you prefer something pre-race besides Gatorade and water). I would say no fanny pack if you are trying to run fast. If this is just a run to finish with no time goal, a fanny pack can work. Pinning gels into the waist band of the shorts works as well.
Brooks Sherpa shorts have a pocket on each hip and a middle rear zipper pocket. Some Mountain Running companies sell shorts with the same setup. I have worn Patagonia shorts in my last two marathons that have this setup. Two gels fit in each pocket. PowerBar gels are easier to get down than GU and some other brands -- less chalky.
At this point you should already know what works (or doesn't) from your long training runs.
Start messing with something new at this point is a recipe for disaster. Would you decide to switch shoes and run in new shoes in this race?

Hello LetsRun community,
I'm running the Boston marathon on Monday and would like some adivce for how to handle water/gaterade/gu/gels/energy shots during the race. Looking for advice on how many to take, when to take them, etc...
This is my 2nd marathon, the first marathon I alternated between water and powerade at each water stop and took GU's at 7, 14, and 21. (if I remember correctly...
ALSO, how do I carry the packets with me? shorts pockets? carry them? fanny pack??
Thanks! (good luck to me at boston hehe)

Forget the fanny pack. Get a camelbak mule and run with that. Also, make sure to wear arm sleeves, compression socks, Hokas or Vibram five fingers, and a t-shirt with Born to Run emblazoned on it. Then make sure to blast out the first few kms at the front of the pack with all that gear jiggling so the entire nation can see you on the broadcast and identify with "hobby jogger-man, the people's runner".
Addendum:
Since camelbaks aren't allowed, just go with the fanny-pack/water bottle combo as seen in this image:

Well, it's not an either/or. If he has a leg-length imbalance he may need to wear a Hoka on one foot and a VFF on the other. Important to get this checked out to prevent injury.
Personally I think there is plenty of water/Gatorade on the course,I feel free-er without packs (this is not a training run/trail race).I will safety pin the packs of gu to side of shorts.
You shouldn't try anything new on race day, but since you're asking anyway... I'm also running Boston and plan to take 4 GU gels starting at mile 5.5, then at 11, 16 and 21. You might need less since you are faster (I'm aiming for 3:15-3:20). There is water/Gatorade at every mile, but since I'm taking gels I don't do Gatorade. I'll drink water with every GU and generally every 2-3 miles. I tear the tops of the GU packets just slightly so they don't leak, but are easy to rip open during the run when my hands will be sweaty. I wear 2 sports bras so that I can store the gels between them on the sides of my ribcage under my arms. Since I assume don't wear sports bras, wear something with pockets and/or something stretchy, like arm warmers, where you can stow gels.

Can I please ask what was changed by the editors?
A 2:36 guy worried about nutrition in a well supported marathon? And they are considering wearing a fanny pack?
I've gone through lots of marathon photos and never seen a sub 2:45 guy wearing a fanny pack. Am I missing something? I run well over 3:00 and never ever considered a fanny pack. Way too cumbersome.
Although after reading how some marathons fill their water stations (with garbage cans and fire hydrants), maybe a camel back is a good idea?
If you want your own GUs, just buy a decent pair of shorts.
Disclaimer: I have no idea how Boston fills their water stations. The comment above is from other marathons.

I trained on one flavour of GU. No issues. I took a different flavor of GU at one aid station once and yakked.
Title should read "3:36 guy" then the post and all the silliness in it would make sense. If I'm wrong, apologies, but still scratching my head.

Another note on my personal experience with GU: If I take one *before* I run, I get a stomach ache, so I only take them once I've already been running for about 40 minutes.
Don't wear a fanny pack or you might be viewed as a potential "crotch bomber".
As others are saying, keep the nutrition the same as in your first marathon. Hip/key pockets are good for a gel or two if they don't bounce. I've also pinned 1 or 2 to my shorts. I pinned the top to the outside and then flipped them to the inside of my waistband so they wouldn't move. No problem with them rubbing, and it was easy to tear off the bottom leaving the top pinned to my shorts.
Based on email for his registered LRC handle his last name contains gorma. If so he's one of these guys:

Probably Aaron who is on 2:36 pace
if OP is aaron gorman, then he had a rough day. 2:47:09 after a 78 first half. started to lose it somewhere after 25k.
probably had the wrong flavor gel
Exactly! I warned him. That chocolate raspberry flavour is nasty.
