Clerk = David G. Knows nothing about the history of the sport. Makes a fool of himself proving it.

You are badly misinformed. Mexico was a road-racing power throughout the 1980s, with guys like Rodolfo Gomez, Jose Gomez, Arturo Barrios, Martin Pitayo, Alejandro Cruz, and a number of others that you apparently don't know anything about.
Martín Pitayo Martínez won the gold medal at the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba. He also won the 1990 edition of the Chicago Marathon, clocking 2:09:41.
Alejandro Cruz; In 1992, he was Runner's World Road Racer of the Year.
Arturo Barrios WR 10000m August 1989, 20000m wr in 1991
Get your timeline straight.
The timeline is fine.
If you're talking about guys running in the eponymous era.

Ummm, who was the first runner to cover a half-marathon in less than one hour on an unaided course?

African or European?
Worldwide then can be only one first timer. Now learn to think.
Arturo bettered the half marathon distance in his one hour track record.
Message for Stupid Comparisons: Yes, Joyce Smith was a track runner in her 20s...but that is irrelevant: we are talking about marathon times, and she didn't start marathoning until she was 41.
Message for Clerk David: "Clerk" and "David G" are two different people (neither of whom know each other). The opinions they express are independent.
Late to the party but I just want to add that Mexican marathoners were always criticized because they will perform well just in races where the money awards were big.
They will attend to some other marathons like Olympics or World Championships just whenever they want to. People knew they were focus in the big bucks of New York, Boston, London, and the fast times of Rotterdam.
It was well know that in most of their appearances in WC or Olympics they will not work as hard as they did in races where they will make money. They were hardly criticized in Mexico because of that.
