Nobody with half a brain hits the wall in marathons anymore with how easy it is to refuel with sports drinks. The reason top marathoners can't run faster is they lack the aerobic engine to cover 42km at the requisite pace. It's just like the 10k...the question is not "the wall," it's whether Coolsaet is fit enough to run 3:05/km for 42.2 km.
You are assuming I was talking strictly about glycogen. I wasn't. Never mentioned it.
You are assuming that slower people don't put out an effort. That's ridiculous. They in theory put out a greater effort.Watch a 2:30 runner versus a sub-2:10 or watch a 3 hour runner....
This record will stand until Mo Ahmed moves up to the 'thon.
Quite possibly true, however, I am guessing Wykes has more in him. So on the right day....
Mo and Cam, when and if they do run marathons (I think Cam intimated that he will) should better the record for sure and I am betting they will run sub-2:09, but saying that, like the article says, Bairu it was assumed would. His 10K and half easily pointed to that. Same with a few other Canadians.
Not saying he's gonna do it, but don't forget Coolsaet took a dump when he set his pb, so lost considerable time from that....he's tough as nails and one of the most consistent marathoners out there.
Are you serious? I've never heard of an elite stop to take a dump during a race. That sounds crazy and a little embarrassing.

Shorter did it once at a race in Japan, not sure it was Fukupka or Beppu. But a Japanese friend told me it was on TV until the TV people figured out what he was doing.

Why stop?
Greta Waitz:
""One of my most dramatic race stories is also my most awkward. I was in the lead of the London Marathon when I got an attack of diarrhea... in my mind there was no question: I had to keep running, despite the shock of onlookers and worse, the television cameras broadcasting the event to millions of people. It was not a pleasant experience, but winning was.” -

Oh sorry I thought when you wrote "the wall" you meant "the wall."

Paula took a squirty dump on the streets of London one year during the marathon. Pics of it were all over the tabloids. British media really loves dragging down their athletes.

She should have been ticketed for contravening the poop and scoop laws.
That's right, I wrote, "the wall" and not "the wall".
The wall isn't just about glycogen depletion. That is a big part, but it is not the only part.
Every person I know who has done a 50K, find them easier than the marathon, saying that, that isn't the full extent of my research...... ;o)
Steve Jones dropped one under a bridge at London in '85 and still won.
Charlie Spedding politely declined shaking his hand after finishing.
I actually ran with Drayton once, long after he retired.
Remember that when Drayton ran 2:10, the world record was around 2:09, that's how great it was. He worked full time, had very little if any of the support athletes get today. What he did have was hunger, and I'm not sure the current crop of top Canadians have that.
So, I'm not seeing it, though it would be nice
Lets give Jerome his dues
This record was set without pacers which would put him in a 2:07 or better today. Jerome put 300K a week in during high mileage weeks
approx 60K more than the boys today
and yes he had a full time job so he could pay his flights
Ran for fun :-}
Hes a modest legend
I think Peter Buniak was better than jerome Drayton.
Waiting for Levins to move up in a few years time. Thought Bairu could do it but it just never happened. Coolsaet is a beauty but sadly I think his time has passed. I bet he runs 2:14
