As most years were back then, '83 was a pretty good year. Great music and no American occupations going on.
Unless you count the brief "occupation" of Grenada after the invasion?
A day or two before the War for Show (aka Operation Urgent Fury/Grenada) there was a bombing in Beirut, Lebanon which killed 240 USMC and 1 USN Sailor. Hollywood made a movie about one of the Marines there, Stateside, 2004. US gives many reasons why US military was there. Truth: peace keeping/pacifying Arabs per Israel's request.
Before someone says I read all this off of Google. Here's a fact only those on the inside know: 1st Battalion, 8th Regiment, USMC was the battalion which suffered loses, October, 1983, Beirut. Last US infantry battalion to arrive prior to Operation Desert Storm, but first infantry unit in entire UN collision to cross from Saudi Arabia into Kuwait, 1st Battalion, 8th Regiment, USMC, January, 1991. I know of two men who were in 1/8, USMC for both. There could be more than two.
