I got a RadioShack Armatron for Christmas. It burned through D batteries like matches and was consigned to the back of my closet because my parents wouldn't keep buying them.
That August I started high school, but in the summer, my dad lost his job. It's the only time I can recall ever seeing my dad cry. Nobody else was home at the time when he was talking to me about it. The strain on him was overwhelming. Took him a year and a half to get another job.
