looks like derrick is about 100m down from the lead pack, but each time they show him it looks like he is passing people. Still early.

I was really surprised by that, and he looked slightly worried when the camera panned by him. But he does have a little while...
it's fine, they've got 10k to go
Who's the big, clumsy-looking American?
Did I just see Derrick behind Korolev? Around 2k now. >6 Ethopians in the top 20, 4 or 5 Kenyan in the same, 3 at the front. A lot of Bahrain up front too.
at this rate, it looks as though derrick will make contact with the lead group by the end of the second lap, or early in the 3rd lap. way to go chris!
Update from Rojo:
Derrick in 30th only 12-seconds off the lead. So looks like he started smart. Commentators are talking about how hard the Africans took off so it was a fast start.
This is from a couple min ago. DIdn't post for some reason.

The lead pack is continuing to get thinner, so perhaps by the time he gets up there, it will only be ~10 other guys.

Super fast start, yeah. Good call Chris.
It's more like 15 now. The Kenyans have been surging throughout this second lap, so if the race at the front slows down, Chris should be fine.
who is the neon team?
Right now (10min in) we have 3 Kenyans up front but the 4th nowhere to be seen. Meanwhile 5 Ethiopians are in that lead group as well as 3 from Uganda and 3 from Bahrain.
Americans:
Derrick in 28th with another American (Rojo wasn't sure who) in 45th. Then
Korovolev 54
Vail 58th
4k, lead pack of 6 with 3 Ethopians, 2 Kenyans and a Bahrain. Buncha trailing off until second pack, Derrick near 20th (?)
Tired- don't listen to me! Too busy watching.

Tanzania
Derrick 20th at 16 minutes in
Geoffrey Kipsang (Komworor) pushing at the front with 2 Ethipians and 2 Kenyans right behind. 2 More Ethiopians just off that group of 5.
Back from there are a lot of gaps b/w the stragglers. Tanzanian guy still in it!
Derrick 25th or 26th 40seconds off lead.
Smith 38th, Curtis 45th, Vail 51st, Krolev 52nd.

A lot of work for Derrick to do in order to medal, prospects falling but I hope he can still do it!
exactly 5:45 for each of the first three laps (5:45, 5:45, 5:43) by my watch of the bbc feed
Another update from Rojo on the US getting crushed. He spoke to a top coach before the race and he said no chance of a US medal b/c there is "nothing to slow down the Africans", they're just going to hammer from the front. In Poland there was cold and slop, but here the conditions are too good. Footing is fine and it's fairly warm.
Not sure what rojo was smokin', but Derrick started slowly and does not seem to be gaining on anyone. His race is finished.
