I'm 27 and can't run or do any sports due to a car accident (built similarly as well sounds like). This paints a bleak picture of my future.

You can do any exercise except run. So, the place you go to look for tips for getting back into shape is a running forum? Also - you couldn't google a non-running fitness program, really?
The incredible stupidity of people should stop surprising me, but it doesn't.
You probably need to take up an activity that lets you set goals of some sort. Exercising just for the sake of exercising is really difficult to stick with, but working towards some kind of goal is what keeps people motivated.
Every wanted to try bike racing? I don't even mean specifically road racing. There is also mountain bike racing (many different forms,) cyclocross, and gravel grinder racing. You don't even have to be good at it. Or if you don't want to compete, how about completing a century or double century?

bike racing is the most time consuming sport in existence. seriously, to be competitive, you need to put in 30+ hours a week.
to the OP. check out the spin classes at your gym. if the bikes have watts it's strangely addicting to see how much you can improve your power output on a weekly basis. the class are 45-60 mins.
clearly you are new here. If you visited these forums with any regularity you would/should realize that there is no topic for which we collectively, don't now everything about.

Ackley asks a good question: why can't you run?
I bring this up because I recently heard a speech given by a former elite runner (ran 2:17 at Houston back in the 80s, among other things) who had a "career ending" knee injury in his forties, but has essentially been restored to running after undergoing a new form of therapy. He basically could not run for about seven years, and is now back on the roads. I found his story very inspiring.
it sounds like the OP needs a non running or cycling competitive sport - he clearly has motivational problems, so he needs a team or some structure to get out the door.
Maybe crossfit is the best option here - be with people, no running, some competition...
Although admittedly I don't really know what crossfit is. But hey, it's lrc,
This is very true, but some forms of bike racing can be less time consuming than others. For instance, if you focus on cyclocross or short-course mountain biking, the races are often an hour or less, so the training can be shorter and more intense. Also, you can do some of your easy training indoors while doing other things. I have a desk attached to my trainer.
The newer ellipticals are quite good. Since the motion varies quite a lot, you'll be able to find one that will feel better than others. Go to a large store and try out as many as you can. Buy one for home, as they are quite affordable. Force yourself for awhile and it will get better and better. Alternate this with some long walks and you'll be much better off. I'm still running 3 a day on the treadmill, but had to use the elliptical for quite a while after knee surgeries. I know it's in my future, and I'm accepting of it. And I've got 15 years on you. Keep going, it is too soon to stop.
This all needs to start with you wanting to make exercise part of your lifestyle. It sounds like you are moving from contemplation to action, which is a good start.
As already mentioned, technology has come a long ways in the past years/ decades. While you say you cant run, and dont like the elliptical, there is still another option- Precor AMT (Adaptive Motion Trainer). It is very close to running, but none weight bearing. I find you can get a great workout on these machines. Plus, you just bring your tablet, set it on device, and watch away. Heck, I look forward to it, some days even more than being outside (especially when the weather is bad). The time can fly bad, especially when you get in a rhythm, zone out, and watch some good shows/ movies.
It sounds like I have similar background as you. Former D1 All American (back in mid 90's), then stopped for over a decade, put on the weight, and had a whole different life (career, kids, etc). It took be a while, but my fitness came back, and my lifestyle evolved that exercise became a "must do." Heck, it keeps me sane these days.
Anyhow, hang in there my friend. Start slow, build it into your lifestyle, and find other ways to get a workout. I highly recommend the AMT machines, and watching TV can actually make it fun. And trust me, in my competetive years, just the thought of the dreadmill made me cringe.

This isn't the only place I'm researching this, just looking for some input from the community. Thanks for your support.
We probably raced each other back in the day.
I'll definitely look into the AMT- sounds good. I think the idea of bringing my tablet to the gym for any cross training sounds appealing. There are so many documentaries and series I'd like to catch up on, why not double dip?
To the guy that said I'm unmotivated, that's kind of part of the issue. However, I do love working out and being fit. My issue is, with two small children, a wife and a job that seems to be 24/7, I find it hard to shut everything off just go do my thing. I swear, the last time I went to the gym I was on the elliptical listening to music and received texts from my wife about being out of milk and some others about work stuff.
I think I need to figure out what it is I want to do and commit to a plan. From X to Y I am in the gym and my phone is off and I'm doing my thing.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far.
Sancho,
How hard are you going on the AMT? I googled it and I've used that machine at my gym and didn't hate it. Is it similar to an easy run or more like an all out effort?
Do you focus on intervals, heart rate, etc.?

perhaps he is feeling conciliatory.
here's a current thread on crossfit - mostly positive stuff for a person like the OP
http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=6390200I always have a workout in mind on any stationary device or i'd just be waiting for time to pass.
For the AMT, i like ladders of hard/easy with the easy at 1/2 of the time of the hard. stuff like 6min hard /3min ez,5 hard/2:30 ez, 4 hard
it makes you want time to pass slowly on the easy sections.
wearing a HRM is good too. you can then mimic track workouts using HR as the guide.
when you said "i also have kids, so..."
i got depressed
rly bad
Just a couple of points...
I was told by two different doctors, at the Mayo Clinic no less, that I would never be able to run again. I was out of running for two years, but now I'm back at a high level (placed in my age group at the USATF Masters Indoors this past weekend). When I started back, I couldn't run even a couple of blocks without pain. What couldn't be treated 5 years ago can be treated now. It's worth checking out. You might be surprised. Or, if that doesn't work for you...
Expresso.com makes spin bikes with an interactive video monitor. You can ride a course and compete against other riders at the same time. You can compete against your own Personal Best as a "ghost" that passes you when you go slower than your PR ride. And it's really your ghost, not just a prorated average time.Your ghost speeds up on the downhills and slows to a crawl on the super steep uphills just like you did on your PR ride.
Go for a spin bike ride and then hit the weight room for some lifts and you'll have a pretty good workout.
