How many major sprint coaches in this country have not coached numerous dopers? The ranks of the elite U.S. sprinters (by the end of their careers) are almost completely proven or suspected dopers. I remember counting back nearly every U.S. woman sprinter in the semis as a known doper from the 2000 Olympic Trials and similar results would be the case for most recent U.S. champs.

She was the first to win a doping case because her positive test for nandrolone was not handled by two separate technicians, but only one. She was coached by Trevor Graham, like Latasha Colander-Richard--who was reported by a Swedish newspaper to have tested positive but I found no other such report.

Great post. Great counterpoint to those who point to a "dark era" of 80's, 90's and 00's, as if it is seperate or removed from our current culture.
Haha. We runners have run gum and nasal strips for running. Real long distance running, naturally, takes obsessive compulsive training (including family vacations, holidays, and birthdays), active recovery (so we don't feel guilty), poor nutrition (lots of gluten free pancakes, binges of ice cream, and other fad foods), and sleep and decades of obsessive compulsive training to destroy our bodies and create leathered skin. We essentially see no results (at least anything under 6 minute pace anyway), definitely no big pumps (unless you count the way my temporalis vein swells when I try to bench the bar with 2 x 10's) , for sure no sexy bimbos (they just don't dig the khakis, old race tshirt, and used running shoe look) and, run gum, nasal strips, no money, cheap plastic awards, fake piety, mom's basement, broken down hondas, watches with white salt stains, pretending to drink and party, only go hard because "light" training is for wussies, etc. Essentially a lying shallow cheating culture that couldn't be truly further from the essence of health, balance, and spiritualism.

This is bad for the sport. Gay shows his desperation to try drugs 3 years ago in first place in quest to defeat Bolt. Like Lance A he is rationalizing his decision in that "they all do it including Bolt." Of course Gatlin is with convicted drug cheat Dennis Mitchell. Great image for our sport.
Now I am not convinced Smith will be able to do much with him. Not exactly done anything with English Gardner as she had backslid nearly half a second on her average top times since arriving in LA from Oregon. Jeter has been injury plaqued last few years.
Ryan Bailey is reported in this month's Track and Field News as having left John Smith which is what Walter Dix did after a year and so did Richard Thompson and Saidy Ndure.

What does this say about the company and there care for PED's?
https://twitter.com/StuartMcMillan1/status/578732320145838080No he did not sign with Nike. Please pull the foot out of your mouth.
If you had any 'inside' knowledge of the sport, you would know that John Smith does not work with anyone that isn't Nike. That's just the way it goes. You can pull your own foot out of your mouth to do the advanced math on this one.
I have a question about Gay's remarkably short suspension due to testing positive. So, I kept hearing that he got a light ban (was it even 1 year?) because of the valuable information he provided USADA. I kept waiting to hear what he revealed, thinking it must be something really juicy.
But I never heard much of anything! As far as I can tell, the incredibly important revelation given by Tyson Gay was, uh, Coach Drummond was the one that made me take it. And he transported it for me.
So Gay gets one year, and Drummond gets 8 years? Sorry, but that's a load of BS. I'm surprised more hasn't been made of this. What's so great about that information that it deserves such a big reduction for Gay? For all his talk about being a big man and facing the music, all he did was blame his coach, and got virtually no punishment.

THIS.
It's all in here:
http://www.usada.org/wp-content/uploads/AAA-decision-Drummond-December-2014.pdfBasically, it says that Drummond convinced Gay that this cream and other mumbo jumbo from this guy Clayton was okay and then was misleading about it (there are multiple times where his testimony is labeled as inconsistent). As a result, Gay lost all results from the date he first used the cream, and then a further year for a total two years banned, from July 2012 until July 2014. Drummond was cited for trafficking a banned substance, and for recommending Gay see and trust Gibson, after he had already known that Gibson had attempted to provide banned substances to other athletes. This is all in the last couple of pages. It says in the report that the recommended punishment for those acts is 4 years to life, and they settled on 8 (maybe because of his position as an official national team coach, or maybe because they thought he was lying to them).
And to answer Nutella1's question (who I guess didn't see this when it came it), it was DHEA.
I love how as people we can bash and hate a person when they do wrong but not be ready to point a finger at ourselves when we do wrong also. Let me give you an insider on this. There was no pressure on Tyson to beat Bolt or try to find a quick mix of drugs to try to beat him. Tyson wanted to run healthy and that's what he was working to. Because as we all know Tyson has been battling injuries the past several years and still given everyone the business. When healthy Bolt can't beat Tyson for example when Tyson beat him I believe is Lausanne. But you guys think what he want. And you ask yourself why Bolt hasn't gotten caught? Are we ready to hang up Track and Field as a sport, because Bolt is track and field. He has brought this sport to a level he has never been before. When Lance Armstrong was winning the tour de France everyone and their mother was watching it. What happen when he retired? It went right down the drain. And that's why I think he hasn't gotten caught and probably will never get caught. Now back to Tyson, like I said he wanted to run healthy and if your coach or any coach has a solution for that your willing to hear it out. As a athlete you do what your coach says because he knows more then you and you trust its for the best. A coach is a person who is the mastermind behind what's going on. Still doesn't give an excuse for Tyson because ultimately he should have the final say. Now why Tyson is with Smith, Tyson has always wanted to train with Smith but couldn't because of his relationship with Adidas and Smith relationship with Nike. So that's why Tyson got with Drummond and it worked because Braumann went to jail and they just continued that relationship when he got out. In order for Tyson to get down with Smith he would either have no sponsorship or sign with Nike. After Adidas abandon Tyson why I say abandon because several athletes also got caught from Adidas and they were never dropped for example Baptiste who was caught with the same thing Tyson got caught with. But that's here nor there. But we also have to remember Tyson is human and has a family and bills to pay. And sponsors are investors who really don't take big hits. Its either a good investment or the shrug of the shoulders and they move on. I can tell you when Adidas dropped him Nike wasn't the only one interested. Asics called. Under Armour dropped the ball and signed Manteo Mitchell which I am still puzzled by and then Nike called. Now if you think Tyson and Smith Relationship Wont do anything your stupid. Tyson is a technical runner and Smith is a technical coach a match made in heaven. But I don't Blane USATF or USADA for giving Tyson that punishment. Why? If you take out Gatlin and Gay who else do you have from 200 down that's consistent? People make mistakes we are human, its what you do with the mistakes. And it's how you fall, you can fall backwards and continue to do the same things over and over again or fall forwards.
On wait! Yes Tyson is signed with Nike and yes the low balled him. But for him it wasnt about the money but about Smith and Tyson still chasing after his dream.
It is useful to hear this explanation. Thanks.

Smith has a much more negative view abroad than he does here. The Brits were up in arms when they learned Mo Farah was meeting with him.
Looks like Larry Wade and Torri Edwards tested positive and were coached by Smith.
However, I think more people are concerned about Mo Greene's admitting to paying Angel Heredia $10,000, a known steroid supplier, and the close association between Greene and Smith.
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/more-sports/greene-coach-tracked-victor-conte-article-1.283208This claims Smith and Victor Conte had a business relationship as did Ato Boldon.
http://www.cstv.com/sports/c-track/stories/052404aai.htmlThat NYDaily News article is a good read.
To be fair, lots of coaches and athletes have had some doping associations, but were never directly involved in doping themselves. I know a well known retired athlete who trained with a tainted coach and along side athletes who were doping, but she never did so herself. I personably trained with a doper for a short period of time and I never doped. Also, Victor Conte (BALCO) was the most respected nutritional supplement company long before he got involved in steroids and continued selling legit nutritional supplements even while running a doping program.
Can't believe anyone signed him at 32. Also, John Smith is a crap coach.

Gay served his ban.
He trusted someone whom he should not have trusted. In the end, he was screwed by someone else.
At the end of the day, he acquired great muscle mass in the weight room and not through pills.
Of course SKINNY distance runners won't understand but I look forward to see the 2nd fastest man of all time compete again.
Charlie Francis exposed a lot of people many years ago. John Smith was a juicer back in the 70's. It's doubtful he's changed. LOL
As a general comparison an Armstrong/Bolt comparison is pretty good. The federation is/was 100% supporting the athletes winning. Never testing positive is no problem. And we know IAAF is thoroughly corrupted.
I'd argue when Bolt retires nothing changes. Like Armstrong, Bolt makes it into the ball sports wrap-up shows. That's about it. IAAF likes to talk a big game, but they ride the Olympic wave (get a solid commission) and not much changes.
Which, is exactly why USATF would never test either positive. This was basically the JADCO system. Test the athletes to be sure they don't test positive when they leave Jamaica. We already know USATF allegedly hid positives.
Do I *KNOW* Gay is doping? No. No way. IAAF and USATF give me no confidence the elite level sport isn't awash in dope. IOC itself has hidden positives to protect their revenue. So, the most likely answer is yes, he's doping.
The stats posted above are the perfect example of just how doubtful it is those are clean times. I really do want it to be different. It would be nice to recommend an elite sport that's clean-ish.
Good posts all around. All I'll add is that I'll be glad when the mega-star Bolt is gone. He popularized Bolt, not track and field.
I'd be willing to bet that even though everyone can point to their own heroes, it was professional rivalries that got them excited to participate in the sport. Lebron was more of a *star* that everyone wanted to be when it was him against the world. Bulls-Pistons was bigger than MJ alone (a jumpstart, at least).
Bolt dominating was not good. It was good for 15 second mentions on sportscenter, but for kids wanting to be part of it, they need to feel like there is room at the top, that the best can be challenged (by themselves one day inn the future).
I may be wrong. Not a scientist. Just my observations.

Nike signed Tyson Gay today and sent him to John Smith who is a Nike coach who has had multiple athletes test positive for drugs.
What does this say about the company and there care for PED's?
https://twitter.com/StuartMcMillan1/status/578732320145838080Editor's note: We have changed the title of this thread. Initially it was titled, "Nike signs drug cheat Tyson Gay- sends him to drug coach." but that is incorrect. Tyson Gay is training with coach Smith but hasn't signed a deal with Nike.
Chris Chavez has an ESPN article confirming Gay is with Smith.
http://espn.go.com/olympics/trackandfield/story/_/id/12525837/former-us-sprint-champion-tyson-gay-working-renowned-coach-john-smithAdditionally, Chavez texted me and said Gay doesn't have a deal with Nike- "Tyson is not with Nike at the moment"
That is Gay.
Gay and Gatlin are BOTH signed by Nike and it will be public soon.
