How long do you think a shoe should be?
A lot of people (running shops, quick online search) suggest to leave excessive amount of space between the longest toe and the front of the shoe, sometimes even more than a thumb width.
For me to do this, I have to buy a larger shoe that I end up having to tie very tight so my foot does not flop. It really looks like the shoe does not fit me as the two sides where the eyelets are become very close together (angle inwards from the bottom to the top of the tongue) because of tight I have to tie the laces. The gap between the two sides is visibly small.
I'm looking at elites and in the majority of the pics they seem to be wearing shoes that really fit tight. The eyelets seem to angle out as they go up the tongue and the gap between the two sides is large and grows towards the top of the shoe.

If I use a shoe fit like this, I'll have slightly less than .5 thumbs width between my big toe and the end of the shoe. am I afraid I"ll be going against conventional wisdom that dictates to use shoes that are larger. After my last two injuries, I am pretty wary of this.
What do you guys think?
