I've done 12 mile runs on a treadmill. Once you get in the zone it's not that bad. For me, the hardest part was also the first 3 miles. Then it's like "Eh whatever."
I do talk to myself more than I'd like to admit...

I did 10 on a 10-lap-to-the-mile dirt track behind an elementary school once. Thought I was going to lose my mind. I have no problem doing runs on a 400m track though.

The famous Ed Whitlcok did 3hr runs (21 days in a row at one point) in a 500m loop cemetary with NO entertainment - other than local inhabitants I guess. I know that I would be talking to them, even hoping they would talk back, after 3 weeks of that!!
I did a 24 miler on the treadmill a few winters ago. Haven't done any long runs this winter but I have averaged 55-60 mpw only running outside one day for 5 miles.
Isn't one of the major benefits of being a professional runner escaping sub optimal training conditions and never having to do something like this?
I used to think treadmill runs due to the outdoor temperature were for wimps but this winter the omnipresent black ice had and constant 15'degree or colder AM weather converted me
Exactly. Twenty miles on an Alter-G is like getting a good massage.
I'm gonna do my 16miles on TM so I can watch house of cards instead of twist my ankle on the ice. I have a woodway and a 50" TV (w/ blue tooth headphones and an industrial fan). I don't mind it at all.
I've done 1, just one long run of 20 miles on a treadmill in my life. I was able to distract myself by watching a handful of tv shows/games at the same time. I still was about to shoot myself if I had to go any further. I've had a handful of runs around 16 miles, but not this winter, that seems to really be my limit for treadmill running. I'd rather miss a long run than do it on a treadmill or 20 times back and forth on the half mile stretch of road near my house that is clear. I'm just never planning on doing a marathon before late may. IDK why a pro like Farah who doesn't have to do that crap would want to. Maybe its fun after years of seeing amazing scenery on every run?
Yeah the benefit is he gets to keep the IV drip on for the whole run
I work shifts at altitude where running outside is sometimes not an option (blizzard). I did a 2.5 hrs long run around a basketball pitch, the only indoors place available to run. It's not as bad as I thought.
I did 26.2 on a treadmill at 90-95% effort twice. I get bored out of my mind doing 8-10 mile easy runs on a treadmill, but if you run hard enough, it's not so boring anymore. So, basically, I just end up doing a lot of workouts on treadmills when the weather is sucky.

This is one of those gray zone tricks. Ingestion with elevated heart rate, and increased blood flow rate.
I did 20 today after 19 and 18 last two weeks. No music and no TV. I've tried music but it bothers me. I like to focus on the run and get into that mental space you occupy in a marathon.
Sometimes I'll turn the tv on (only really long runs, up to 10 no tv required) to look at something, don't like wearing earphones so don't really listen to what's on. Personally, if there are two or three people in the gym I can watch workout, that's the best distractor for me.
its also is job. it took what? 2 hours max? most people are bored at their places of work for at least 4x that long
Do 20 min warm up and alternate 2 min hill (at a good pace for fitness level) with 2 min easy for an hour, 10 min cool down after. I did it today and maybe another couple of times this winter, when the weather was too much.
90 min+ at one speed is too boring, I did it in the past but long hill fartlek is the only way for me to do a long run on a treadmill.
