I ran this a few years back, good race, well organized.
I feel bad for the elites who went off course.... it sucks to lose the $.
End of the day though, pavlov has it nailed. If you're going to race with a tech meeting, course tour, etc, thats awesome. If you only want to race courses offering tech meetings and course tours, no one is forcing you to run Birmingham.
However, if you're going to a race without those things, do what you need to do practice the course in advance. Get out there with the map the day before.
Freaking use google street view and run the course virtually on your home computer.
I know a few of the Hansons folks are blaming travel arrangements for limiting their time to see the course... whose fault is this? IF you want to get there in time to see the course in daylight book a different flight. RD specifically warns of making sure you don't miss the split.
