Got a 1600 PR a few weeks ago, indoors.
Lap 1: Okay stay at the back but be in the pack.
Lap 2: Came settled in, and came through faster than I thought I could. Kids at the front were opening up 3 or more seconds ahead of me. I was the 5th seed and was sitting in 10th. Some fear.
Lap 3-5: Chilling. Coach yelled at me because my splits were getting slower and slower. I couldn't hear him though because I'm in the zone.
Lap 6: Lactic wasn't kicking in yet so I upped the pace and passed a few.
Lap 7: Kicking time, extend my stride and start passing.
Lap 8: Winning time, start pushing my arms and pass the entire field. Win the heat by 4 seconds by kicking the last lap hardest.
It went 70, 73, 76, 65 (34/31). Surprised I had a 4:44 in me. Previous PR was 4:52. Hoping to hit a 4:35 or so this Spring.
First 200: "Stay out of trouble, don't get boxed in .... who's the idiot who keeps clipping my heels? ..... move over, stay outside, there ... that's better."
Next 1000: Completely zoned out, don't remember a thing.
Bell lap: "Crap! How far back am i? I GOTTA GO NOW!!!! ...... (gosh, I'm passing a lot of guys ... where did this kick come from?"
