This is as close to an average talent table I’d say you’re going to get.
Important Points to consider when interpreting MPW:
1. Two athletes running 50 mpw will invariably differ in their race results. This can be stark, or less predictable.
2. The results differ because of a) talent, b) prior experience (even down to soccer days as a kid) c) SUITABILITY to the training stimulus (increased mileage in the case of this thread) d) other less crucial factors (eg mental toughness, biomechanics which will determine the efficiency of TRANSLATING those miles into meaningful miles, nutrition, etc- however all of these belong on a very important spectrum also).
3. Given such diversity, 50mpw might get one guy to sub 18mins 5k shape while also getting another to sub 17mins 5k shape.
Personal Comment:
1. I don’t use mileage as a target. It is a product of the training I devise (which is primarily time based).
2. My goals don’t correlate with many, I would say (speed for sub 2mins 800m, while also maintaining a sub 17mins 5k fitness, without compromising either aerobic/ anaerobic energy systems).
3. Looking back on a running average basis I consistently hit 55mpw which I do not aim for, and which drops during tapering.
4. The single biggest eye-opener for me with regards to improving endurance across the board was the correlation between my Heart Rate and Onset Of Blood Lactate Accumulation (OBlA). From which I could determine what intensity to run at in order to improve my body’s ability to BUFFER (not tolerate) lactic acid. This is also the reason, I believe, I have had continual progression for the past year.
Hope this helps some of you, it did for me.
