I actually had the chance to meet Zane a few weeks ago, and he mentioned wanting to break 60 in this race.
I thought it was a stretch, but I'm really excited he got it done
I was actually at the race. I didn't see this because i was at the finish line, but apparently around mile 9 Zane ran over to the side of the road, squatted down paula radcliffe style, dropped a watery semi formed turd then got right back to the race.
Tremendous performance from Robertson. You can't just say that it is in line with Hall, since there are lots of 13:13 5k non-African runners but hardly any sub 60 non-African runners. This is clearly a product of hard work and dedication, giving over their lives in comfortable first world circumstances to go live the life in Kenya. But you cannot contrast him to 'genetic' marvels in Kenya. If you go to Iten and see 350 people out for the weekly fartlek, you're not going to think that Kenyans don't get there through hard work and dedication. Robertson obviously has a great future in the marathon.

I am surprised that the internet is not broken yet. Truly an awesome effort.
Probably because there are about 200 people in the world who give a shit about what goes on in the world of distance running.
Great job and great range by Zane. He will still have a huge task to match ATBAMF Rod Dixon's range: 3:33 and 2:08 at NYC (prob worth 2:06 in Berlin). To be fair he is already faster at 5000.
No, that was Jake.
The next race I know of for him is the Auckland track meet on the 26th? of Feb. Willis and both Robertsons are in it and all aiming for Adrian Blincone's national record of 13:10.
Nice time if the course is accurate ?

To be fair, Zane just beat Rod's HM National Record by ~2 1/2 min., so I'd say he's well on his way towards getting a better marathon time than Rod and having a more impressive range.

Zane is a great story, but Rod Dixon was an Olympic medalist at 1500 in 1972, World Cross bronze in 1973, ranked #1 in the world at 5,000 in 1975, a close 4th in 1976 Olympic 5000, bronze in World Cross in 1982, and won the NYC Marathon in 1983. Zane would have to get at least one OG/WC medal, win a WMM, or get a top world ranking to be compared to Rod Dixon in term of range. Dixon's career was 30-40 years ago so you can't go merely by PRs.
No thread or anything about Shalane's mysterious DNS?!
She's tweeting about a cookbook instead, and no one cares? This would never happen in any other sport. If an athlete was supposed to compete until the minute before the game. Everyone would go and find out what happened!

For the same reason, you can't go merely by places.
The 70s were a complete joke compared to 2015 in terms of running depth in the world elite.
Zane Robertson's 59 is huge. A guy with that ability in 1976 would have crushed Dixon.

Well, start one then.
Duh.

You're clueless, Rod Dixon won the NYC Marathon in 1983. The depth of the 1983 NYC Marathon makes TODAY'S look like a joke.
Finally sponsored! He's wearing the Adidas pro kit. Good on him.

Shit... Just two years ago he thought he was a miler. Then again Ryan Hall was a miler as well.
What makes you think he isn't a miler still?

Why are Kenyans the best distance runners?
Gang signs, greasy hair and flat brims.
Why did he dye his hair? He looks like Roy Orbison. They both used to look somewhat like a Cro-magnon Vanilla Ice, but they were OK looking, what is he thinking?

Hall is a sub 60 non-African with a similar 5K pr and that is why you can say that Robertson is in line with Hall.
