this guy is a First class idiot. he clearly did it for some personal gain. He talks about the "real" Heroes who were out there during the storm doing the work...How about creating a potentially dangerous situation for yourself or others thus requiring the services of those heroes.
It's not special...it's paint on a road. and he can't even properly respect that. This could also affect the boston trial.
I have run wharf to wharf in Santa Cruz since I was a kid. It is a local event turned big charity event. Which is fine, but remember, it's a local event. People jump in, walk the course and don't have bibs. Who cares.
You are a little tight & suggest you relax. The dude shoveled a finish line. He's jumped in his local hometown race, likely not running the whole thing.
Go get laid. You'll feel better.
A little research shows he finished in over 5 hours. Fastest time I found was 4:12 so he probably can't qualify. Maybe ran for charity in 2011.

You must be a newbie if you don't know who Tx is. She's bringing up a legitimate point for discussion btw.

She's the only confirmed female on this site. So she's a bit of celebrity to all the basement dwellers who have never seen a real girl.

Every weekend in the summer there is a race in my City. I will bandit the free food and juice area , but not run the race. One time I took 17 bagels and 9 juice boxes home. That was my biggest score. I'm looking for races with free energy bars this year. Maybe snag a pair of demo running shoes as well.
My knees are not that good, so biking might be an option for exersize this summer. Guess I'll have to go to a highschool and steal a bike.

They don't? Aside from the money given to the towns by the BAA to cover police, etc, the local economy also gets a significant boost from the MILLION spectators that come out to watch. The spectators buy food and purchase gas, or go into small mom/pop stores along the route. Those purchases are often taxed and go to infrastructure.
No, they don't. If you did your homework, you'd know the towns along the route routinely complain about the costs they must absorb. And the spectators don't come close to offsetting that difference. Do yiu really think the relative handful of folks on the sidelines in Ashland make a significant dent in the town's shortfall?
I pay taxes to help build and maintain those roads. My taxes pay the salaries of the police along the course. I'll run the damn race, if I wish, because I paid for it. Power to the people!

Hey, don't forget Patty C! :)
As for the Boston Shoveler - nice gesture but the hero nonsense is BS and he is the first to agree.
Cons about this guy: He shoveled a piece of pavement and got a free entry into the marathon. Also, he's slow.
Pros about this guy: Banditing. I actually am a fan of banditing. As long as you don't finish through the chute and don't take any food/t-shirts/etc. you should be legally allowed to run the race. All you're doing is running on public roads.
A hero would have shoveled the start line and all the road between the two points.
I scabbed, (as I call it), Boston back in 76, my sophomore year in HS. My dad Loaded up the station wagon with my uncle, a big time runner who had run boston many times before legit, and my self. We Arrived the night before; had a big bowl of clam chowder. What did I know about pre race meals at that age. Woke up the next morning and was able to fry an egg on the sidewalk for breakfast. It must of been 115º, in the shade. Had massive cramps at Whelsley, and was experiencing chills near the finish. Ran to about 50 meters of the finish and stepped off. Got lost in the crowd and took an hour to find my dad and uncle. They unceremoniously loaded my stiff, aching body in the back of the station wagon and drove back home to Jersey. Priceless.
It's public roads, he can do whatever he want. This is how it has been for years in Boston.
As long as he doesn't use the buses to the start or grab a medal then what's the big deal. No harm, no foul.
When I'm President I will invite both the Bandit Shoveler and Joe the Plumber to the White House.
Huckabee, the Shoveler and the Plumber on the Treadmill Runner
Followed by Gravy and Biscuits and Gravey and three straight hours of viewing of
Blade Runner

If he loves the race so much, why doesn't he support it, maybe by entering it, for starters.
Exactly. All the crap about "I'm not a hero" "means so much to Boston" etc etc etc made me think this idiot had swallowed the Dictionary of Insincere Platitudes. Only in America do people buy this sort of sh1t
NO! You are only entitled to bandit the section of the race that runs through YOUR town.....not the entire course.
I've bandited Boston twice, have also qualified and run it twice as well.

Most of it is on state roads which were built and maintained with my tax dollars. The final part is in the state capital city which receives state funding because of that distinction. I\'m running the whole damn thing, if I want to. Power to the people!
There are a couple of ways to enter Boston legally. One is to qualify.
If not, run for a charity and become part of the team to raise funds while receiving a training program.
And of course there are always exceptions. And yes, I do think adidas is happy to make the "Shoveler" legal.
I, for one, do not like "bandits", especially in a special race such as Boston.
Did the Hoyts get special treatment? Nada. They qualified by running the qualifying time for their division, men's open.
They shoulda just bandited.
