fantastic run, notable for being 1st ever solo < 1'43
( by solo meaning no one directly ahead of him at any point )
to this day, only Rudy & Kipketer have managed
some criticisms/caveats :
- no drafting, costing ~ 0.35s
- not a fully rested effort as was 4th run in 6 days albeit 3/7 rest before semi & final
that probably cost coupla tenths compared to a fully rested run with no racing for best part of 1/52
- stoopidly quick start at ridiculous 24.1, when 24-high is optimal for a gray calibre guy, & still too quick at bell in 49.4
it says in commentary he wanted to go out really quick to kill off everett
this doesn't sound great plan as top-3 all woud go to games & everett was not in gray's class & a comfortable win in a sit'n'kick was easily in gray's remit
that ridiculous start 200/400 probably cost ~ 3/4sec compared to a smooth 24-high / 25-flat/low to bell with expected 2s +ve differential compared to the ridiculous +3.88 engendered by crazy opening 200
realistically, that 24.1 wouda taken all the starch out of him already & it's a miracle he hung onto 1'42.8
in a fully rested, ideally drafted-to-bell without ridiculous start, & 2s +ve splits he was capable that day in a zurich/brussels/berlin/etc of
~ 1'41-mid
