I was on a high school basketball team that won a game something like 108-16. The second time we played the team I think it was only a 30 point win. I can say in our case, we were not trying to run the score up mercilessly. Now 161-2, seems a bit more excessive, but my point is, these kind of games are not always as cut and dry as the score might appear.
Running the score up with no mercy at all is obviously not the right approach, but the hard part is determining at what point going too easy is just removing the game of basketball (or whatever) from the contest. If you're playing reserves in the second half is it "better" for the inferior team if the superior team passes the ball around for minutes at a time or misses shots on purpose? At some point, I'm not sure that's any better.
