I wear gear from races I've never done (or didn't do in the same year). My former sponsor gave me unsold merch once upon a time. The merch doesn't say finisher on it. Yes, people will occasionally ask if I ran a particular race, and I just answer honestly, "no, I did not, but I like this shirt."
And not to pull the real runner card, but serious runners don't care whether they or anyone finished a race. Wearing a jacket for a race you didn't run is actually pretty similar to throwing out your finisher medal. Two sides of the same coin: both indicate that finishing a race is not something you consider an accomplishment.
