Kara Goucher in 2015

Looks like she wants to keep the track as a back up if she bonks in the marathon trials. The US is not very deep at 10k. 5k would be tough with Huddle and Rowburry.

Marathon looks to be Chicago or Berlin.

Those were my exact thoughts, she has to be realistic with the current talent of women marathoners and needs to keep her options open as far as worlds (even making a 5k or 10k team) and Rio. When was the last time she raced outdoor track?

Sad thing is, she can make the olympics in the marathon and 10k. No depth in those two events for Amercian women, I mean, besides Shalane, Amy Hastings, Deena, Desi, who else is there? Now I will say, Denna did beat Kara in New York this year but, Kara Could maybe have done a lot better if she were in shape. I still believe an in shape Kara Goucher could beat Amy Hastings too. As far as the 10k goes, Hasay, Conley, there are at least 5 other girls already pro or coming out of college who could give Kara a run for her money there but its still not impossible.

Well getting in shape is the real trick isn't it? Kara was way off her potential in her last marathon and did not look particularly fit. It was sad watching her finish - I don't think those were tears of joy.

I'm not sure that she has the mental fortitude to do what it takes in training anymore. She probably has a good income, is a bit of a celebrity, and has achieved modest success on the international scene. I hope she can make it back but I doubt the needed motivation is there. The talent is still there if she can somehow reach deep for it again.

It always appeared to me that Kara lacked self confidence and I think that the training with Shalane may have hurt her mentally while it helped her physically. Their ability is basically equal, but Shalane is much more mentally tough and I think all that training together had the side effect of priming Kara's mind with the idea that she is not good enough and would fail.

But lets hope for a big comeback. If she could do somehow do it, it would be the kind of inspirational story that american running needs.

Maybe , but probably not. Giving excuses for a poor year , ok , understood but the bottom line is Kara has slowed and will not be near her PR's. Her better shape is not equal to what it was when she was younger a terrible truth athletes struggle with as they age. The group that graduated over the last 3 years are coming into their own now. A fit Huddle today easily beats Kara at her best , maybe you have not seen their side by side times or Huddle race.

She could probably make more money as a fitness/wellness athlete than a runner. Less stress too....

Idk, as a runner who has transitioned to a 30-40 mpw + lifting regiment, I can say I find it makes for a much more balanced lift. If you can make a living at it, power to you

the woman is a joke..and you can quote me on that in the months to come.

What a coincidence that she publishes a blog on the day they announce the Boston elite field. Did she have that waiting in her draft box ready to click publish? Always trying to grab attention and stay relevant.

Fitness competitors look quite differently. They have curves in all the right places. Kara is basically has the stick figure shape.

I suppose it might be a harder balance than one would think, but I'm always a bit surprised - and kind of unimpressed - when PROFESSIONAL athletes talk about how stuff other than training SIGNIFICANTLY got in the way of their training. In laying out a schedule (and a contract/obligations?), wouldn't it be obvious that nothing committed to or done could significantly get in the way of training? And yet you hear this kind of stuff ALL the time from athletes in lots of different sports.

Those sorts of commitments didn't prevent Meb from winning Boston and placing 4th at NYC last year.
