This.
I see on letsrun very requently the abilities of PROFESSIONAL athletes being undermined. I think it was just the other day I saw a thread stating that the average professional elite female soccer player could run about 14.x 100m and 24:x 5k. And also how “very few” pro spccr males would break 5 in the mile. Truly laughable that the skinny unathletic twigs on this website think that their training is *so hard* that professional athletes can’t come close. Professional athletes could run all over all but a few runners at any event they choose given TWO WEEKS of preperation and a couple of sessions practicing pacing. Every single professional male athlete in any sport that even requires a MINISCULE amount of stamina or power is going to break 5. Even tennis players. Professional athletes in contact sports are professional for a reason and that is because they have bodies with an outstanding amount of all-round strength.
To us gentically inferiors, running a 5 minute mile is a lifetime goal that we have to pound away at daily and practice in order to achieve. To a pro athlete, who is hardwired very differently - it is just nothing more than running hard for five minutes. Totally doable.
4:30 however, is a different beast. I’d say anywhere between 30 and 40% could break 4:30 but 100% are breaking 5 no problem. 75 second laps, childsplay for a pro.
