Excellent summary of the soleus CoachB. I too have chronic right calf muscle and I'm pretty sure it's the soleus. Here is a quick test: stand on your toes both feet, bend at knee for the bad leg, then slowly lower your foot to the ground with the bad leg. If you feel pain, it's the soleus.
I am lost with how to remediate this muslce. I have tried:
- massage sticks
- seated calf raises
- myofacial release
- eccentric heel drops (3x15 straight leg, 3x15 bent leg, twice daily per Dr. Alfredson protocol)
Myofacial release with a lacrosse ball seems to ease the pain immediately. I started eccentric heel drops last night and it hurts this morning. Please help anyone - I want to get back to running.
As a side observation, running slowly (more forefoot and mid foot strike cause more pain. Faster running, which induces more heel strike - little to no pain while running.
Thanks,
Marlon
