I ran for a smaller program consisting of 4:30 mile guys like myself. I ran for a Southern school, with Southern football-style athletic department. I think our AD was some lineman from back in the day. This being the case, I believe there was some pressure for our coach to deliver 'wins' in cross country. My first year of cross-country I raced 5 weekends in a row. I'd never run further than a 5K in my life and suddenly needed to deliver five 8Ks on consecutive weekends (in addition to adapting to the collegiate world of multiple workouts per day, higher mileage, more intense intervals,etc.). I felt pretty crummy by October.
Most of these races were pretty weak, consisting of D2-D3 private schools and small D1 schools such as mine. Many of us would have loved to have been given a chance to rest up and have a shot at pre-Nationals or Roy Griak.
