I've always thought the long jump would actually be cooler if they switched it to be like the high jump: keep moving a marker farther away, and jumpers have to make each distance.

No changes. It's a magnificent and unique sport that can stand the test of time. So pure in itself in the way the performance is solely up to the mental and physical performance of the athletes.
I've admired Barshim's jump multiple times. I wish he didn't take so many early jumps and we could have watched that particular effort at 2.46 meters or more.

Same with the pole vault. Same with the horizontal jumps. Same with the throws where they release well before the foul line. It's not about how high you jump or how far you throw or how fast you run, it's about all these things WITHIN THE RULES of THE EVENT. In high jump the recorded height is the bar height. In throws and jumps it's the same from the foul line. In sprints if they allowed a running start like in football 40s, 100m times would plummet, but it's about how fast you run 100m from a dead stop -- that's the rule of the event. Should Steph Curry get 4 points for a make from near half court well beyond the 3 point line?
I like the suggestion of a laser to record the highest "unofficial" height achieved during a jump, but the bar being the recorded height. So the rules would be the same with the laser height for comparison, kinda like having a radar gun at a baseball game.
Just start a competition at the current WR height, and go up from there. Or start it one inch over.
Do that until someone beats the record, then move it up. This isn't difficult.
You want a podium? Have a one or two-jump qualifier as a warm up. Participants choose their heights; maybe someone goes for it then and wins everything. Nike could probably throw together a Sub2 type of effort here, do this in a super controlled environment, have distractions removed, tuned shoes, etc. Heck, the same carbon plate they are using now for the road racer shoe would probably do it in HJ.
"I like putting a giant windbreaker behind the runway, although it will block some audience"
Couldn't their mom and dad or gf/bf just move to get a better look?
Please, never ever change this magnificent sport.
Jumping off one foot is unnatural and difficult.
Running around a curve while leaning is difficult.
Aligning the body while running fast is difficult.
Using the takeoff leg like a pole vault pole is very difficult and hard to comprehend.
The feedback is flawless (the bar falls or stays up).
I love this sport.

The high jump already did change to METRIC, probably long before you were born, moran. If you're talking feet and inches, your opinion means nothing.
