What would you prefer, then? Something more true-to-life, like these women slumped in front of their laptops with bedhead and a frowny face? Or maybe something kind of avant-garde, like them yarn-bombing an abandoned factory in Detroit?
In all seriousness, the profile pic as a genre involves people trying to make themselves look attractive, often while doing "cool" things. Yes, the result is often corny and hackneyed, but does that really matter? Even profile pics that are just landscapes could be construed as a humble-brag: look how unconventional and non-egotistical I am! I'm sure people could find something to criticize if they're looking for it.
For the sake of comparison, I'd be interested to hear how many of your runner friends have profile pictures of them doing something running-related: racing, posing with teammates, wearing a singlet, etc. I can guarantee you that there are those in the non-running population who find those at least as annoying as you do the NYC pictures.
