Forget trying to id the snakes, just leave them alone.

Lots of snakes have musk and this likely was a harmless water snake. By guess what all snakes are harmless if you leave them alone.

Drowning or harsh chemicals is an awful way to die.

Water Moccasin's are the devil's pet. You should have no pity for them "herpetologist". If I had to bet, I would think that if you and Water Moccasin decided to hang out in a small closed off room together it would attempt to bite you. If you are protecting these creatures you are doing the devil's work. Wouldn't surprise if you played with a Ouija board recently.

I am the manager of the sewer maintenance department in a metropolitan city in the midwest. Vermin of all types have the ability to end up in the toilet. The reason it doesn't happen more frequently is because the sewer system is generally sealed from intruders and they need a defect or hole in the sewer to enter, like a hole in a manhole cover. You have eliminated that obstacle by introducing the snake directly into the system via your toilet. From your home to the sewer main is a relatively small diameter pipe (4 or 6") which connects into a larger main (8" in diameter or greater). The snake could reside anywhere in either of these pipes. There is plenty of oxygen and plenty of food. If I were you, I'd probably go with some strong drain cleaner in an attempt to poison the snake. That being said, it usually just gets flushed down the line and may not be effective. While I think there is relatively little chance of the little fella rearing his head, I can't rule out the possibility.

You're safe, don't worry about it. But... next time just kill it.
