Sara closer to beating Ryan than Ryan winning
Sara closer to beating Ryan than Ryan winning
Surely there can not be more than a dozen posters who think Ryan Hall is still relevant.
I saw God yesterday, and he said he too is concerned about Ryan. I'm assuming the two of them will work this out.
Hall has my respect, too, and the fact that he is religious is not an issue for me. I wish the Halls all the best.
What the other poster said about tennis players and baseball players rings true. That is how I remember it--25 was old in tennis, and most baseball players were clearly in decline at 35, sometimes earlier.
Sadly i think I know what happened here.
Ryan hall was doping in his "2:04" marathon days and when he "found god" he actually got with the program and quit all that shit and now is running at his actual level. There is no way in hell that he went from running a 59:00 half to not even being able to do that in an all out effort in 10 miles. He is off the dope and a nobody now.
Relax everyone. Hall rarely underperformed, and is eyeing up some solid winter training. Yes, he is coming off injury. And it wasn't too long ago he ran well at Boston and Olympic Trials.
With this terrible performance, it seems the 2016 olympic trials are wide open. Literally guys like Cabada, eggleston, arciniaga, and vail are the favorites along with meb. Ritz hasn't run in a while, abdi is done. Who's it going to be?
Ryan & Sara's careers seem to be tracking Adam & Kara Goucher's.
Both couples were great in hs.
Both couples were great in college..
The guys had brilliant but brief careers and grabbed all the headlines for their first several years as pros.
Then, the wives took over and had brilliant and much longer careers.
Can't help but believe that, looking back 10 years from now, Kara and Sara will have achieved more than Adam and Ryan.
Ya'll are hilarious. How many of you can run 50:25?
Until you can run at least that fast NONE of you have any room to talk.
This entire forum is filled with broke talk.
Who cares what the guy believes in? Let's talk about his RUNNING and strictly his RUNNING.
Intolerant douche bags.
I was going to make a similar point, but did not have the guts to do it. To me, 50:25 is absolutely flying, and so I cannot criticize Hall in any meaningful way. I admit, though, that I am disappointed. I had hoped to see better from him, and I wish him well. I did not run in high school or college and more or less picked up running later in life (in my forties). I can hardly imagine what it would feel like to run that fast, and to have that much talent. I am happy with my recent 1:05 mid in ten and then 1:26 low in the half, and so your point here about perspective is quite salient.

Amen.
For years, he has been unable to stick with any coach for long enough to make a difference, and he has repeatedly acknowledged that he needs to get his old speed back, but he never has committed to doing that kind of training, since his 59:43. I wouldn't be surprised if both he and Ritz run another good marathon, sub 2:09, that is. But injuries have obviously made it hard for them to get to the starting line healthy and fit for a long time.

for pete's sake, I'm talking the last 8-10 years, since he became a world class marathoner...not since he was a high school or collegiate runner. it hardly matters what he did 12 years ago, does it?
It does if you use the word "always," as in "Hall has always [i.e. throughout his lifetime] been terrible at distances less than a half marathon." To say that about a guy who's run 3:42.xx for 1500 is ign'ant at best, assholish at worst.
I have run faster than 50:25. Went through 50:07 in a half once although don't think you have to be able to run a certain time to have an opinion. You have to admit Hall struggling to break 50 compared to what he used to run is very poor even if it was a tempo run.
It is well know that Hall was on Thyroid hormone. He was named in that Dr Brown article a while back along with Rupp and Bob Kennedy. I would like to know if that has anything to do with his good performances and if stopping taking it (if indeed he has) has anything to do with his poorer performances now.
Think also Halls lack of focus on maintaining 5-10k speed in recent years as well as the obvious injuries is a major reason for his massive drop off in performance.
I can run that fast. People can go up and down with running and with so many changes in coaches its easy for us to see why, not always as easy when its you in the moment. I believe once he gets a few months of solid training under his belt he will be fine. I like the Once a Runner analogy of training. Sometimes the spiral doesn't always take you upwards but you are building momentum for that next upswing.
Does anyone remember watching some of his workout scattered all over the Internet? Like this one?
He ran 49:3x in a workout at altitude after doing 12 miles at ~5:40 pace. Something has changed......besides just age. Missed watching him at the trials in 08 and in his early marathon career. I think we'd all enjoy it if he got back to challenging for podiums in majors again.

I'm not even suggesting Hall is done, but your video only enforces the idea that it could be age, since it's six years old. The careers of some elite runners don't even last that long.
I was ridiculed when I posted this before (multiple times) but I'll say it again.
Hall's biggest mistake was to think he was a legitimate 2:04 runner after Boston 2011. From then on, he trained like a 2:04 runner (when really it was a 2:08 performance) and picked up one injury after another.
Renato Canova didn't help when he said that runners didn't have an advantage that day.
Lets hope Hall will understand one day, rebuild from there and adjust his training paces. I hope he gets one more awesome performance (like 2:07) before he retires. I doubt it though.

you were probably ridiculed for making stupid/ignorant statements...
