Nike "Elite" Trail Running Team: Sally McRae... Runs over 50mins for 10k

Oh and I'm a Nike supporter, 100%... I just don't see why they are wasting their time with Oiselle caliber athletes like this.

She's all over instagram, and apparently is the darling of the Nike "Elite" trail running team.

I am hesitant to look into the credentials of the other member on this team, as I'm sure they're equally pathetic. Do the runners on this team have contracts? Or do they just get free gear?

I'm calling it right now, trail/ultra running is a sham. I'm honestly jealous, I wish I could find a way to market myself and get a Nike contract while not being able to break 50 mins for 10k.

I'm more confused by how a 53:39 10 Km somehow produced an average pace of 4:13/km... that makes no sense at all.

If you divide 55:39 by 4:13 / km, you get almost exactly 12.7 km. Either the results you found are completely erroneous and bogus, or you're too dumb to tell the difference between 10 km and 12.7 km.

(Yes, she's still not blazing fast. But she has nothing to prove to someone like you.)

Your problem is that you mistakenly believe that fast times result in money. Before the internet, this was indeed the case. Today, being cool/popular through social networking gets you money. And getting money through running makes her elite/pro.

She's a very good trail runner, top 10 at Western States is a very solid result and should be respected. She's not as fast as the top female trail runners though. Calling her elite is probably a stretch... As more and more talented road runners enter the trail running arena her lack of speed will likely keep her from podium spots at the big races that matter. But, she gets attention because she is a good ambassador of the sport. I would venture to guess that she knows this too, she seems like an awfully genuine and nice person.

My first thought was maybe she used it as a training run. I know elites have the pressure to perform well at every event but there are many races (if the entry is cheap) I use as a carefree aided training run. For all we know, she could have run 20 miles beforehand.

That course climbs 800m over the first 3-4 miles. The top male runners barely break 7 min at that event. And a 15k for an ultra runner who regularly does 50-100 milers is like a 1500 for a marathoner. McRae is a very solid ultra trail runner. Definitely an "elite" ultra runner. Not sure why anyone would want to take the time to bash someone who has run multiple 50 milers in the 8:30-40 range and placed very high at the big 100 milers.

This. People need to realize that this is a trail race, meaning that it isn't going to be flat. If you think you can run on a course like this as fast as you could in a flat road race, then you are crazy.

To give some perspective on trail races/times.

I am a 31:26 guy on the track and tend to compete better on the trails. This summer on what would be considered a pretty fair trail course, I barely broke 46 minutes for a 10k. I had run 15:18 and 15:30 on the roads the month prior to give you an idea of my fitness going into the race.

She got 10th place at western states. Another Nike trail guy ran 2:25 in New York.

Most of the Nike Trail "Elite" athletes are not that elite. They are mostly just good at races where there is little competition. When they go to big races they crap the bed.

Forgot about Varner as well, another bed crapper. 2:25 that day is maybe worth 2:21. That is not elite by any means. He got beat by a ton of 2:22 guys and also some Masters athletes and even a few ladies

Why so much love for the trail joggers?

This chick has no reputable race results to indicate that she can run a standard distance (5/10k) in an elite time. Quite honestly, I don't think she would a HS XC state meet... Obviously this excludes states like WA or CA where high schoolers can keep pace with the pros.
