I think Lemond was better than Lance.
In 1986, Lemond won under team adversity.
Lance only ever won the Tour de France thanks to a large team effort, including team doctors, and political relations with the UCI, something we now know he orchestrated at a very sophisticated level. Even doped, I wonder if Lance wins without doped teammates.
Lemond's victory in 1986 over Hinault was a lot like Contador's victory over Armstrong in 2009.
Is Lemond a bitter jealous old has been?
He would have many reasons to be bitter.
- Lance's reactions to Lemond's comments cost Lemond his bike business (something Trek estimated was worth $30 million)
- Lemond deserved to be recognized as an American hero. Lance stole Lemond's legacy. Look how many people still now accuse Lemond of sour grapes.
Is Lance faster than Lemond?
Tour de France is not something you can compare times, since every course is different, and the race is pure tactics. However, Lemond holds the Tour de France speed record. Albeit, it was a very short time trial, flat and slightly downhill, so it's not realistic to compare this to anything else, for the same reason that comparing times across years don't make sense.
Is Lance pure evil?
Let me say something positive -- had Lance raced in earlier eras, in the context of "low octane" drugs, thing might have been much different. Although doping has been prevalent since the beginning of the tour, Lance was put in a position that required a new tactic to remain competitive, that many others were not, and his competitive, organized nature was applied to solve this new game.
