I guess the consensus of this thread is simply: they don't run quite as hard all the time, but still run big miles and stay consistent because of the moderate intensity. Moderate meaning they still have hard days but not at the density of back in 1998 when they were getting hurt a lot more.
Which is also the philosophy of every single other top program which develops its athletes over the long term.
See: Mick Byrne/Wisco, Conner/Portland, Syracuse, Schumacher/Wisco/Nike (Solinsky freak accident aside), OK State (Dave Smith actually does a good job, despite what people say about German getting hurt a lot), Chico/Towne, Adams/Martin, Oklahoma.
Not sure what Oregon does these days to be honest, nor Stanford, UCLA, Indiana.
