They did lose their distance coach (Rodney Stoker) who left to go take care of his parents. Layne came in late, and even so, he's no Stoker.
Give them another year to see what happens on the distance side.
Stoker better? Lol. Layne Anderson will get some studs there. He had good runners to Iowa. Not to mention 13th in the country one year. He's going to improve the distance program for sure. Give it time and the XC will move up the ranks. Excellent recruiter.
It looks as if Layne Anderson has improved the distance squad, I knew when I read this originally that he would. Beth Sullivan is a fantastic coach and has been since her days at Stanford and Penn State, she just needed time to build some depth in the distance areas and they finally have. The men came in 5th at SEC XC, in which they were projected 11th. They have continued that into the indoor season with some pretty fast 3K times, especially Zach Long's 7:59, which is a school record I believe. There has also been major improvements in other guys as well, such as, Robinson, Swiney, Hillsman, Brey. Some fast times from the freshman have occurred too. The women aren't nearly as close to being relevant as the men are. However, they showed great improvement this season as well with Murray and Schumacher getting all SEC Honors in XC, which was nowhere near happening the year before. I have heard they have recruited well on both sides this year. If that is true, and with nobody graduating from last years team, then the men should be in a position to make the podium in SEC XC next year and maybe a berth to Nationals out of the weak South Region. The women should look to make the jump the men made this year and build on that for the future. The distance side is looking a promising part of Tennessee Track and Field.
