So you were offended by being called a "young lady?" PRE was a real man and took his issues to the AAU president, some one in charge of the rules, not some coach who is just doing their job...Just curious, if Beth were a man would u have popped off? It sounds like you were scared to do it as it was with your heart racing and all, I bet if Beth were a man you would have been too scared. Do you believe drinking and driving is also an appropriate choice?
You did the right thing. Make your own decisions, don't let anyone else tell you who to be, and you'll do okay. Now go get some mileage in over the summer.
Rojo, I actually agree with you. The NCAA system is messed up. (I coached in it.) I often wonder if athletics should go the way of DIII and the Ivy League and not offer athletic scholarships at all. The pressure on athletes and coaches both is quite over the top. This is what you get when you have athletic scholarships and coaches being paid six figures: a system of high expectations. Fortunately, there is a balance of good and bad coaches out there. I'm not necessarily said BAS is a bad coach. Like I said before, she was put in a difficult situation from the previous coaching staff. But, for every coach out there taking advantage of an athlete, I believe there's another out there helping athletes develop and grow.
My main point in writing what I did was just to bring up things to consider. I believe the article was a little blown out of proportion. We never heard the other side of the story (admittedly because UT was quiet about it). But they did act within the rules of the system, even if it was unfair on a bigger scale. The main issue is the system.
I also think UT track is actually growing in the right direction now. Does this justify what BAS did? No. But she is actually getting the job done. And if you ask the athletes on the team, they'll probably say there is actually a team atmosphere and direction now. Something that didn't exist before BAS got there.
Dude, you don't get it. People are outraged that the NCAA has become all about two things 1) Money and 2) Winning at all costs.
What about education, loyalty, ethics.
She should have at a minimum let them compete this year. That's not wasting a year. To be honest, she she should have given them their full rides, let them train with the team and let them redshirt if they want or compete if they want. The AD SHOULD HAVE insisted this be the case or he should have hired BAS last January before recruiting.
It's pretty amazing that the day after we put this article up, we also have an article about a suicide. These are human beings - not points.
Not true. I went from not being a beth fan to being a beth fan just because I couldn't possibly side with people who think division 1 is a hand holding party where everyone gets to play and everyone gets a trophy. Take your entitled, mediocre bullshit to d3
I have followed this thread closely from the beginning of when this situation came up and I agree with 99% of the posts here. BAS is clearly self absorbed and has no respect for the athletes. But the one question I have is why don't we all do something? How about we send emails to either the athletic director or her directly? We should make enough noise to the point where they are forced to respond. At the very least, give a public apology.

Who you are a fan of or are not a fan of is irrelevant to the moral status of BAS's actions.
You not liking people who disapprove of BAS's actions is not a defense of BAS's actions. That is to say, you liking her for this reason does not mean that what she did was right.
Therefore, your objection is irrelevant.

GTF off the boards Beth! Everyone knows it's you! You cannot change public opinion by trolling on a message board as a person defending BETH or Beth defending Beth. So obvious.
Get out, you'll get yours! Karma will happen!
why do you all think letting those girls practice with the team for a year would be the moral right thing to do? If they worked out with the team all year they would be upset every weekend when they didn't get picked for the travel squad. How stressful is that? You are working your butt off and still not good enough, and mom and dad and your friends wanna know why u are not running and you have to say my times are too slow I would finish dfl so coach didn't take me. Better to just not waist everyone's time and spare some emotions over the long haul. They got an admissions spot at UT, a full year of scholarship money, and freedom to be a real college kid. Why the hell would UT's attorney issue a public apology for that? No one has emailed them because when they read their email draft it all sounds stupid and who wants to put their personal reputation on the line for some freshman girls with helicopter parents. U sound like a baby "let's get together and send emails" that'll show'em! Delete delete delete
Totally agree 1%er. Helicopter parents doing more harm than good and getting on letsrun whining about it.
They weren't kicked off the team because they weren't good enough. That's one of the reasons BAS actions were so morally repugnant.
But, then, I think you know that and this post is intended only to cloud and deflect. Sorry, peddle your BS (or should I say, BAS...) elsewhere
Link, you seem to have an anger issue. Constant name calling and assuming that everyone that doesn't agree with you is BAS is not only childish but proving our point. Please try to have a good day. The world is not out to get you.

Again, with the deflection. None of this ^ has anything to do with the behavior of BAS. If you have a rational argument that BAS did the right thing, then, please present it.
This is as dead on as it gets. Most of the crap on here are people like "link" who think it's morally wrong to cut someone who you don't feel is good enough to be on your team. It's actually just high level athletics and it's likely you just haven't had any exposure. NOT A SINGLE RULE WAS BROKEN. The chicks actually got a year of free
School for nothing and they still have 4 years of eligibility elsewhere, if they are half as good as their parents think they are then they should be able to find a team easily.
Once an athlete signs up for a scholarship they are not allowed to contact other coaches to see about being on another team. They need to go to classes and keep up their grades. And they need to practice and be part of the team. On the other side of the coin the athlete should expect to have the opportunity to compete for a spot on that team. To kick new kids of the team three or four weeks into the school year, months before they are expected to compete, is just wrong. It's called fulfilling an obligation. You sign the letter of intent and you have the rightful expectation that you will be part of the program. Period. Otherwise, the entire system is a sham.
This is black eye for the University of Tennessee and I hope other kids stay away in droves.
It has NOTHING to do I what BAS did or didn't do. That is what you don't get. You may not agree with it but it was legal and happens in the working world as well as college athletics every day. Take a deep breath and do the right thing from here. Tell your daughter to train her butt off and show BAS what she is missing. That is the best thing you and she can do. Whining for a year on a message board does NOTHING to help her. It only teaches her how NOT to react in a proper way.
I would be upset too. There is nothing wrong with being upset but please tell me whether you think constant whining will help your daughter or just scare off possible teams that may otherwise be interested. I would not be interested in a young person whose parents react in this way.
Back to what you just said to me - "If you have a rational argument that BAS did the right thing, then, please present it." I do not. I also do not have all of the facts and have never heard BAS side of the story. The issue is that it does not matter.
Good luck to you and your daughter. She really can learn a lot from this and come away stronger and more prepared to deal with the harsh, real world.
Because dill weed, she purposely waited to tell them 2 weeks into the school year. They got no one to train or coach them, no facilities other than a late hour track use. This was done purely so they couldn't compete against UT. If this sounds reasonable behavior then I'm not sure what can be said.. This is what change is coming to the ncaa , athlete union would serve them right.
No.
People take issue with cutting someone before they have even had a chance to compete. Particularly when the athlete was recruited by the school.
In such a case, the athlete signs a letter of intent, committing to the school. The school has a moral obligation to keep up their end of the bargain, so long as the athlete keeps up theirs.
The school failed to do this. BAS's actions were wrong.
P1) Slavery was previously legal.
P2) If legality is a sufficient condition for morality, then slavery was moral.
P3) But slavery was not moral.
C) Therefore, legality is not a sufficient condition for morality.
Non-sequitur.
This is has no bearing on the moral status of BAS's actions. Therefore, this objection is irrelevant.
