I was just thinking of Norm Green when I came back to this thread. John Farrington was another. I think Mark Curp fit in here. Really, for a 2:09 guy like Gabius, 5:50 pace shouldn't be very hard. The marathon is an event where you're pretty much avoiding oxygen debt the whole way and 5:50 pace is about a minute slower than that.
Green was unknown to me. Thanks for sharing that. I'm perpetually fascinated by those who seem to find success with nothing but high end steady state mileage, as that's very much the sort of thing I enjoy doing. (Though I wouldn't last more than a few days clicking off 5:50s)
