Im pretty sure .8 is not equivalent to 800 meters interms of miles. and since when did the 1.5 mile race become really big?

By definition, you could JOG a 3 hour 4 minute marathon but your pacing would have to be incredibly good so as not to run a few of those miles.

If you are under 60, I wouldn't do one unless it were under 1:40? But that's me.

The best part about that picture is that the van owner isn't a runner at all. Some kids vandalized it with stickers.

Agreed. The only acceptable attitude is to put a sticker on your car announcing all of your accomplishments.

In addition to my Sidney 2000 and Athens 2004 and various PR stickers, the Bimmer is also sporting the following stickers:

(500K/yr)

(MIT Parent)

(Stanford)

(Ferrari Club of America) **

(BMW M3)

We also have stickers for the East Hamptons and several of our European vacations.

My wife and I want our children to grow up comfortable with success and not ashamed of their accomplishments. No self loathing here.

An acceptable attitude for hobby joggers would be to have the self-awareness that yes, they are slow, and by default, their accomplishments should not be compared to anyone else's except their own.

A mile is a mile no matter how fast or how slow, but running a sub-4 is an accomplishment; running a sub-10 can be done by almost anyone (even with age-grading).

The problem with these stickers and hobby joggers in general is mind-set and attitude. If cycling had the level of trendiness that running currently does, all the hobby-joggers would be cyclists, and facebook would be full of cycling pictures, rather than overweight "runners" posting pictures of their 2+ hour half-marathon finish-line photos. Hobby-joggers want the instant gratification and congratulations that come with completing a distance, not realizing that it's pace, not distance that is the hard part. But then again, it's why there are finisher's medals for races as short as 5k.

I think the difference between a runner and a hobby-jogger is a hobby-jogger goes outside and runs, carrying way too much gear, and doesn't really care for getting better; they just want to have a fun time and get a picture/medal/swag.

A runner runs because they have to. It's like breathing or eating. It becomes who you are. Yes, a runner has fun, but they are always looking to improve, to get better, to become more than they are. There are slow runners, but they are working as hard as they presently can. I have far more respect for the 2+ hour half-marathoner who is going at their maximum effort than the 2+ hour half-marathoner who just jogs it in.

I haven't met a single hobby jogger who brags about how their achievement is better than someone else's. No, I don't count those obnoxious people on social media. I have never "met" them in person. Have you?

On the other hand, "runners" on this board constantly bash hobby joggers for whatever reason. They are the ones who cannot be proud of their own achievement without putting down others.

You might assume that all slow people only care about finishing, but I haven't met many hobby joggers who don't care about the time. Are they working as hard as Olympians? No. But that does not mean they are only "having fun."

That is about that standards that I set for myself. If I don't think I can meet those times I usually don't bother racing.

A couple people posted something about the pace not the distance being the challenge.

A 5k is harder than a half-marathon if both are run correctly. Running a fast (compared to the relative fitness of the runner) 5k is pure hell, while running a fast (compared to the relative fitness of the runner) half-marathon is usually on cruise control till the end.

I'm somewhere about 1.57 x WR for most distances. I'm trying to improve, I'd like to get to 1.5 or better. Maybe that ratio should be age graded though??

1) Not counting those on social media, I have not.

2) I've never bashed anyone for running/jogging/exercising in general.

3) If one cares about time, one is not a hobby-jogger.

On a board known for generalities, I am surprised at the reaction this has received.

Thank you. I have had a very long day at work. Clicking on this car made me acutely LOL... and not just in print.

I don't care who it is, or how slow they are. they have no taste, they junked up their car, and it made my $#!tty monday improve.
