A persistent hatred of the English is the mainstay of the Scottish identity. Even those of us who bear no animosity towards the English whatever still like to poke fun at the silly w*nkers from time to time.
It's funny because a long time ago lots of people were opressed and died.
So the big vote is today in Scotland.
It's pretty fascinating if you ask me. In America, several states voted for independence and we all know how that worked out. There was a war.
I have several questions.
1) Is there any chance that if the vote is yes, the England will simply flex their military might?
2) Also can you tell me how the Scots have kept their identity all of these years? I'm amazed any of them still identify as Scots. Scotland joined the UK in 1707.
It would be vary bizarre in this country if people started suddenly calling for an election to rejoin Britain - our old country. But we were part of Britain more recently than Scotland was on its own.

TOMMY: Doesn't it make you proud to be Scottish?
RENTON: I hate being Scottish. We're the lowest of the f*king low, the scum of the earth, the most wretched, servile, miserable, pathetic trash that was ever shat into civilization. Some people hate the English, but I don't. They're just w*nkers. We, on the other hand, are colonized by w*nkers. We can't even pick a decent culture to be colonized by. We are ruled by effete arseh0les. It's a shite state of affairs and all the fresh air in the world will not make any f*king difference.

I love that speech.
Scot: I have a sexy accent that drives American women crazy.
Brit: I have British teeth.

You do realise a Scot IS a Brit, don't you ?
Off with your head!!!! Britain is a name invented by the English. Scotland is part of the U.K.
Where does Wales come into all of this?
Any chances Wales goes next? I mean if you have your own world up team, then shouldn't you be your own country?

Interesting take, given that last year Scotland sent 46 billion pounds of revenue to London and only received 27 billion pounds of funding back. Looks like it's the English who have been suckling at the Scottish teat.
Since Scotland got its parliament in 1999, everything they've done independently has been a success. I hope the vote turns out yes and they kick major ass as an independent nation.
Are you assuming the entity you call "Scotland" was entirely responsible for all of the North Sea oil and gas receipts ?
Because, I have to tell you, that oil and gas currently belongs to the United Kingdom and not Scotland.
Ever heard of the Barnett Formula ?
And yes, as an Englishman, I'll be happy to let the chippy Scots go it alone. Good luck finding a currency. You'll probably be forced into the Euro - just ask the Greeks and Italians how "independent" they felt in 2012.

Good grief. Don't start with this one again.
Great Britain is a GEOGRAPHICAL entity made up of Scotland, England and Wales. Scotland will remain a part of Great Britain irrespective of the vote tonight.
The British Isles also includes Shetland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands etc.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island contains Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Island.
If the Scots vote for independence, the United Kingdom will contain only Northern Island, Wales and England.
Those waters with oil rigs will belong to Scotland and the owners of those oil rigs will have to pay Scotland for the drilling rights.
Also, the 46B wasn't all from just oil. It was from all tax revenues combined.
From everything I've read, the banks are more than willing to keep the currency in Scotland, so I don't think that's going to be a problem.
Anyway, we have to wait for the vote to come back before any of this is decided.

I don't think so. Next in the agenda is Falklands.
Err, it's not up to "the banks" to "keep the currency" (sterling) in Scotland. It's up to the UK Parliament, which directs the Bank of England. The Bank of England serves the government, remember.....
Scotland, can, of course continue to use Sterling, in the same way that Panama uses the US Dollar. But it will have no control over the currency. Which kind of seems to gut the notion of independence, if you ask me.
This is what the Greeks found out the hard way. When Germany says something, the Greeks have to step into line.
If you keep using sterling, the Westminster parliament is under no obligation at all to take account of the Scottish economy. Unless Salmond, with his reasonable tone and diplomatic manner has somehow convinced the UK Government that it's willing to be partner in a formal currency union ?
I must have missed that bit about Salmond acting like a grown up.

The only place the Falklands would go if they left the UK is back to Argentine.

Nope. Scotland didn't decide to do this out of the blue. The UK has agreed to abide by the results.
I'm not sure what the Irish nationalists are thinking now. Years of terrorist attacks, and Scotland might manage to get independence first just by going through the tedious political process and then putting it to a vote.

Unlikely, Scotland has all of Britain's nukes.
How will Britain re-establish herself as a nuclear military power if Scotland votes yes? That really is the worrying issue.
Let me answer the OP with a question. Scotland is a part of the UK. Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States. Would there be a Civil War if PR left the United States?
The comparison in military is about the same as Scotland to England as USA to P.R.
The Ricans, know very well that if they left the U.S., they would be overtaken by the China-backed Cuba before lunch.
Scotland is more stable than P.R. and they don't dump their trash on the sides of the roads out of tourist areas. But, Scotland has known no other life than being part of the UK, and with that enjoyed the luxury of protection of the UK military, allied USA and great foreign trading relationships that come with being associated with the UK.
Not millions of dollars, but trillions of euros would disappear, and would take years, not weeks, but years to re-gain.
