$50billion is looted out of Africa annually by the continent’s corrupt leaders, lamenting that the trend has adversely affected the economies of African countries as the stolen funds could have been used to develop the continent.
It is a shame that over 50 years after many African nations obtained independence from their colonial masters, the continent despite possessing a rich heritage of natural and human resources, continues to languish in poverty and underdevelopment due largely to corrupt tendencies and bad governance by most of her leaders.
The indisputable evidence of this unfortunate development is that Africa trails Europe, Asia and America in all indices of development.
Most African countries are plagued by grossly inadequate infrastructure such as roads and power while social amenities such as hospitals, water, schools remain beyond the reach of the majority poor even as the funds needed to provide these facilities are allegedly looted and stashed abroad by corrupt African rulers.
No wonder that no African country is ranked among the top 29 on the 2013 Transparency International Corruption Index.
The least corrupt country in Africa is Botswana which ranks 30. Nigeria a leading country on the continent ranks a distant 144.
Economists say Sub- Saharan Africa needs to invest $93b yearly to bridge the infrastructural gap with the developed world while $100b is needed annually to meet the need of African countries in electricity and transport.
The $50billion stolen by corrupt African leaders and carted out of their countries to financial centres abroad yearly can finance more than half of these needs and bring succor to their citizens
