That's a track & field rule bra.
In xc u'd have to hold hands or cut da course.

Actually, a few years ago, maybe it was 2012, Arkansas' best runners skipped their home meet to run somewhere else. Then the B team totally jogged it at the Chile Pepper 10K, finishing in 45 minutes, way way behind even the back of the pack.
I really did not understand the point of that. Did they have to have a "team" there since they were the host? I think it was just 4 guys anyway, so not even a team. My thought is, just stay home if that's what you're going to do.

If running an 5k in September is going to ruin your entire fall, you've got problems that jogging a 21:10 won't solve.
+1
Many colleges start racing in early September and continue to race every 2 weeks (D3 and NAIA schools often race weekly) and are still strong in November because they have a smart coach! That said, I think the coach was worried because of excessive heat and humidity, rather than just running a 5k.

Should have raced it as a fartlek or tempo, taken a water break after the race, and then run the course again as another tempo/fartlek for a total of 6.2 miles. Schools do that all the time, sometimes at their home invitational (Eg Stanford). Some of the guys on that team are on scholarship. Freaking dumb. That coach should be FIRED.
Just race man. Football plays every week. Are they at their best and injury free at the end? Every sports gets constant press BECAUSE THEY PLAY. There's something to report.
You wonder why our sport sucks? No one races!
Most coaches don't care about dual-tri meets anymore they've become nothing but a tempo run.
Schools schedule two and split the squad. Who cares. UC coach was probably concerned with someone passing out and having to take a mandatory 5 day medical rest?
CC has become an Invitational and Regional Championship sport. Many Eastern schools have to travel to the MW three times in addition to the NCAA.
The NCAA should do away with that rule about how you can't earn at-large points till the last weekend in September. Then coaches wouldn't screw around with early season 6k tempos and we'd get to see some early season upsets.
getting into those meets costs money to the school. if you are going to just jog it then he shouldn't have entered
"a decision was made to preserve the safety of our student-athletes by taking it easy"- Head Coach Sam Burroughs. God forbid your student-athletes ever get challenged. Are we to believe that the coaches and athletes on other teams were not being safe by competing? (also, where are the results?!)
"he put the squad through an intense tempo workout the day before knowing it would be very tough to have a good performance on Friday because of the extreme heat."
Let me get this straight: It's this guy's home meet; essentially his time to show off in front of people who might actually care about his sport, and he whimps out. He could have had them race the 5k as a tempo workout during the heat instead of the intense workout on Thursday--no one would have known the difference.
What if it had been the soccer team or football team? Would the contest had been cancelled? would the teams have played easier? No Way! They would have played their normal routine and learned how to adjust in the heat!
This guy Burroughs is such a whimp, it disgusts me. Under the guise of "safety" as he put it, he can undermine his performance.
While some on here are calling for him to be fired for this offense, I don't necessarily agree with that knee-jerk reaction. There are fair-rules in place, as others have discussed, and he should be held accountable towards those rules.
NC State did the same thing last weekend at App. State in a 4mile race. They averaged 26:30 (6:30 pace) a little faster than Cincy, but still not an honest effort seeing that they took 5 of the last 6 spots and talked the whole way. Was what Cincy did great for their home fans? No, but honestly when do runners or coaches or honestly the entire sport of running really seem to care about the fans? maybe just maybe thats why there aren't that many.

Why are we criticizing a coach for looking out for the best interests of his athletes? Are we really comparing xc to football? Obviously the coach felt it was not worth risking the short term health of his athletes. Coaches are often too stubborn and short-sighted. We should be applauding him for actually caring for his athletes.

If the conditions were that bad, the race should've been cancelled. It was the Cincinnati home meet, after all. I understand there is a rule about requiring a meet because they started practices so early, but I'm sure a waiver could've been obtained due to weather conditions.
But conditions weren't that bad (dewpoint was about 73 at race time). Humid? Yes. Dangerous? No. A lot of guys were able to run sub-5:00 pace, not bad for a rust busting first meet of the season. Here are the results, since Cincinnati can't be bothered to post them:
http://www.goxavier.com/sports/c-xc/stats/2014-2015/queencitym.htmlJust a sh*t move by the coach.
Promote this man to the Cincinnati team:
49 47 1779 Alex Chappars UC Running Club 16:18.88 5:15/M
At least he was able to put forth an effort and finish in the top 50.
Absolutely pathetic.
Why even start the race?
One more reason the rest of the world might just be correct to see TnF/XC as a total joke.
Coach must be a mouth breather. Just cancel the meet if its "humid". Don't make any more of a mockery out of the thing.
Anyone know the coaches email so we can contact him and let me know what an idiot he is.

Can anyone post a link to the NCAA rule that requires an XC team to race within x days of starting team training? I'm looking but can't find anything, and it's not something I've heard of before but I coach in DII and we always open about 2 weeks after we open preseason so maybe It's just not something that's been on my radar. For other sports you can have months between when you start team trainign and when you start competing, for example skiing we can start training the first week of school but no college races until January.
The other thing I'm wondering...It was 5k. If you are worried about the health of your student-athletes why not just set up a couple water stops on the course or some sprinklers they can run through to cool off? I produce races and this is something you worry about, but we're only talking 15-18 minutes of effort for these guys, it's not a half marathon or a marathon in 95° weather. And as a host, you're worried about your student-athletes so you have them jog through it, but what about the other school's student-athletes? It was the same amount of hot for everybody in the race. If the host felt it was too hot for their athletes to race it seems to me they had the responsibility to not let anyone race.
Just seems wierd to me.

He specializes in pole vaulters, per the Cincy Bearcat bio.
Why would this bother you? How does it affect your life?
And NOBODY and mean N-O-B-O-D-Y outside of the hardcore running nerd-ocracy would or will ever look at ANY cross country result from B-grade ncaa meet in September.
The faux outrage over this is very hard to understand. Anyone who is truly outraged by this should seek anger management counseling.
D1 has a limited number of practice units before the first scheduled comp.
NKU hosted the meet.
This team is not even regionally ranked. Nobody cares except for that one person who keeps posting under different names.
