That's not true. Do you understand how football works? The Rams have very good defensive ends and are very deep at the position - that's why Sam was cut.
Let me use an analogy. Let's say you are only allowed to keep 53 players for a college track team. You already have 8 sub-13:10 guys. Sam's stats from the pres-season which were VERY GOOD - indicate he's quite promising - a 13:10 guy. But you are judged as a coach by how you stack up in head to head dual meets with other teams.
You clearly have no use for a 9th 13:10 guy so you cut him. Why? because 13:10 doesn't do anything for the Rams. They need a long jumper/triple jumper (another position in football).
To be honest, it reminds me how we dominated track and field at Cornell. Every Ivy team had 20 9:15 2 milers. Their track teams would be a lot better off instead of getting the 20th 9:20 guy, they'd get a jumper or thrower now and then.
