This being said, The Ocarina of Time is probably the closest thing one will get to a consensus pick for best video game ever.
Yeah, that's true. I was very young when a link to the past was released and I only have faint memories of playing it.
I always thought the N64's 3d graphics just opened the whole world and added to the epic feel of the Ocarina of Time. Ocarina of Time has still held the test of time, it still looks impressive today and was a game changer. It's amazing to think it was made in 98.
Agreed on all points. Super Mario 64 was, if anything, more game-changing and revolutionary, and still holds up equally well to a modern playthrough. It was a little less polished than OoT, but almost as good.
Goldeneye, while one of my favorites at the time (I still preferred Perfect Dark, even then), doesn't hold up as much on a modern playthrough. It did pioneer console multiplayer, although games like Quake II, Counter-Strike/Team Fortress Classic, and others I'm forgetting (Halo 2 in recent years) helped pioneer the online multiplayer which is (sadly) now the norm. Does anyone else miss local multiplayer and feel that online multiplayer is lacking the personal fun that makes playing with friends in person so memorable? It's a sad trend that has made me play less multiplayer than ever in the last few generations.
Half-Life is the most influential single-player first person shooter ever (I think without much of a contest), and remains my dual favorite game ever, along with Ocarina of Time.
In recent times, I've been loving playing Arkham Asylum/City (playing through the latter now).
