Wetmore and Burroughs have a long history of finding Diamonds in the rough. Read "Running with the buffaloes".
They develop incredible talent over many years. Emma Coburn is a great example. They don't necessarily look for instant point scorers.

They were clearly out of money this year. That said, doesn't seem to matter too much as next year they will just reload with:
Saarel 7th
Pearson 15th
Murphy 39th
Moussa 95th
Perrin 107th
Winter 177th
+One of these other 20 guys who ran sub 9:10
At the end of the day, what is the difference between a 9:10 guy and an 8:55 guy anyways? There are so many circumstances that go into being a successful collegiate runner that a 15 second differential over 3200 becomes negligible. Just consider that they must stay healthy, passionate, academically eligible, learn to live the correct lifestyle and most important be willing to do the work. I can certainly agree there is a great distinction in talent between an athlete running at the very top level like Saarel but ultimately guys like Pearson were one in a couple dozen and now look. Where are the other guys from the class of 2011? What happened to every other guy who broke 9 minutes for 3200?
If you want a perfect example of how little difference it makes whether a guy runs 8:50 or 9:07, just look at Kyle King of UVA. The dude was not a national champion. Not a sub 4:10 guy. Not a sub 9 minute guy. And yet, he is an ACC champion in the steeple, has run 8:41 and has a top 20 finish at NCAA in XC. The important aspects are environment and coach-ability of the athlete.

Competing with Stanford's high quality recruits is rarely an issue because they always under perform. Oregon is usually pretty good though. Colorado will be fine.
Always? Maybe if you are 4 years old.
Well when Wetmore doesn't want one of the top Americans in his own backyard (Cerake) then this is the kind of recruiting class you get.

Ever think Cerake wanted to go somewhere that he was offered a scholarship?
CU didn't have em this year.
that looks like a pretty good recruiting class to me, especially if they didn't have a lot of money to offer this year. I would actually be more concerned as a Colorado fan if they started regularly bringing in superstar classes like Standford and Oregon. I would worry that Wetmore was abandoning the system.
Dont they currentlyhave a super star team? Hursyz was a stud (3:45 1500m when recruited), Pearson was a 14:03 guy when they recruited him, Saarel was the dream mile champion (sub 4:05), Moussa was a national champion, right? I mean that seems pretty super star to me!
So what you're saying is they should be concerned because what works for 9:10 guys wont work for 8:55 or better type guys??
Colorado is ranked #25 nationally. That's impressive.

CU didn't recruit Hursyz or Pearson out of HS. Not sure if that is what you were implying.
They're both transfers I believe.

the age-cheating africans aren't welcome at CU, but it is open arms at eugene ck and elsewhere
transfers who were in no sense blue chip at the time. They had run 3:45 at UNC and 14:03 at duke. in what sense do collegiate athletes running those times correlate to the blue chip, diamond in the rough types that everyone seems to equate with colorado ?
They don't run the 1500m or 5000m in high school... Do some thinking before you post.
Just shut the fk up, dude. You've been embarrassing us.

I never said they were "blue chip"

huh?

Why are you so hostile
I merely pointed out they were not high school recruits. And then said NOT SURE IF THAT IS WHAT YOU WERE IMPLYING
CU lets in every gang banging rapist from South Central for their football team.

So does Oregon and USC.

Just stop. Cerake was born in DENVER COLORADO. He is not an age cheat or a foreigner.
He deserved $, CU didn't have any. He is not white enough? You mean like The Portland team that has its top 4 from Colorado HS?
Posted before but the far majority of Colorado top preps do not go to CU.
I don't think it's that bad
"...what is the difference between a 9:10 guy and an 8:55 guy anyways?..."
...about 47 seconds over the course of 10 kilometers. Or roughly 50 points in a dense part of a race.
Luckily good coaching can make up for that.
Colorado just entered the PAC-12 and doesn't yet have the immense resources of a private school in the Center of the entertainment and media capitol like USC, or the greatest most famous private school on earth like Stanford, or the top nuclear, particle physics, plus a thousand other geek subject matters like Berkeley, nor the fame of the NCAAs top athletic program like UCLA. Please be patient with Colorado. It takes time for a simple school in middle America to adapt to the unattainable fame of the PAC-12.

Wetmore is a great coach. I have seen him take

Hundreds of coaches do that every year.
