I don't think he was actually given a yellow card, the commentators were equating the punishment with what would happen in football.
He really got the card, they showed it.

Spain have protested and may get him disqualified as am pretty sure it is against the rules.
lets wait and see
He was given a yellow card. I saw it on the broadcast.
A scary looking dude.
Am aware there are actual yellow cards for sprints but was not aware the actual card was or could be given for that sort of offence.
Anyway medal ceremony has been postponed so looks like a discussion will happen overnight. He was technically in breach of rule 143 of iaaf rules.
Personally think he should be fined or punished but no doubt he was the best athlete out there.

Apparently, a protest has been filed.
That was clearly over the top, but I would not want to see his victory taken away.
Now the official results show him DQed

JURY OF APPEAL DECISION: Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad is disqualified from 1st place in the men's 3000m steeplechase after Spain protest.
#FreeMekhissi
this is the best news I've heard all day - can't stand that guy.
Mekhissi is going to run the entire 1500m final on pure hate and win. I know what you're thinking, that only lasts for 800 meters, but just watch. Don't piss off a wounded tiger.
gotta dq him, just think if a woman had done that ...
It's confirmed.
LRC Note: The poster is referring to his antics at a race at the 2014 European champs as detailed here:
Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad Does it Again – Wins Steeple, Loses Singlet and Respect
IAAF Rule 142.4.b
Rule 142 - Entries
Rule 142.4 - Failure to Participate
Rule 142.4.b - The athlete qualified in a preliminary round of an event for further participation but then failed to participate further
REALLY? I would have thought it would have been for some form of uniform infraction, perhaps Rule 143.1 or Rules 143.7 to 143.10, but then again rule 143.10 does imply that an incorrect showing of the uniform does imply failure to participate which leads back to Rule 142.4

142.4 prohibits you from participating in further events.

in both cases it is clear he is being silly, i am also sure in both cases the mascots knew what he would do, and it was preplanned comedy/silliness.
LOL. This guy. And people say runners are boring? He's our Suarez.
Here is the video of him removing his shirt
