Why do you think your ability to run kinda fast should allow you to receive financial assistance to an institute of higher learning?
I respect your viewpoint.
As it is, I see too many all-american, all-district, all-conference awards being handed out. A DIII all-american in the mile runs about a 4:07-4:08 as a senior. A DI all-american in the mile runs about 3:56-3:57. Both can say they were all-americans in indoor track & field. Meanwhile, mid-major D1 conferences are won in times like 4:02-4:03 and nobody knows who these people are. Hell, they really have no shot of even making it to the national finals. And for what do they do all this? A medal? A name in an official competition document? Internet search engine recognition? Facebook statuses?

I think too many people are allowed to run in college. As a whole I think too many people go to college as it is. I think colleges have marketed themselves too much on a beer drinking, pizza partying atmosphere. College in my mind should be boring. An open forum and some young adult freedoms but boring and strictly studious. Reserved for those who have truly demonstrated that they belong in higher education. This way we can eliminate graduate schools. If you get a 2.5 in high school you probably shouldn't go to college. You should probably get off your butt end and start working a blue collared job. If you get a 3.5 in HS you should be allowed to go to college.
If we limit the opportunities we won't flood the market with "underemployed" workers or rather, entitled workers who believe they are worth more than they are.
I don't think everyone should be entitled to go to college. Too many accumulate debt they'll never get out of, become twixters and eventually become social burdens on society.
Eliminate non-revenue generating sports that burden the revenue generating sports. Eliminate sports that lack the opportunity to grow athletes into professionals. Eliminate all the fluff enrollment at colleges that bring middle of the road students back to high school. Strengthen high schools so kids are actually able to contribute to society right out of high school. Stop distracting high schoolers with sports and dreams that will never come true. Eliminate meaningless majors like "Human Ecology" and "Art History". Eliminate grad schools except for a select few.
We don't need everyone in college. We don't need 20-something varsity sports. We don't need a flooded labor market with entitled individuals who can't even do anything worthy of being paid. Get rid of it all. What the hell is Boise State anyway? Why do Australians, Irishman, a freakishly tall Zimbabwean and hoodrats need to play basketball at Winthrop?
We could do more with a lot less.
