You are a bit out of touch, aren't you?

great and chaotic last lap with so many runners who didn't belong there refusing to move out of the way.
Generally I agree that lapped runners in a distance race(or "back markers" as the BBC commentators like to say) should move to lane 2 when the real race passes them.
It isn't quite so simple when a pack of 3-5 is sweeping byt, though. Moving out to lane 2 to allow an inside pass would still impede someone and cause more disruption than running straight on the rail at a steady pace.
It's frustrating to watch, but these lapped runners weren't necessarily discourteous.

Cam moved off the rail sufficiently for Kipsiro to get through for the gold, a tactical mistake after a great and chaotic last lap with so many runners who didn't belong there refusing to move out of the way. Levins would have won silver if he had stayed on the rail there, but he was classy not to close him out when he was getting through. The best man won.
Can someone explain why Cam Levins needed to move wide in the home straightaway????????
Makes no sense to me, particularly with a crowd still in it.

You'd have to ask Cam.
Still a great race, finally a medal holder - for Canada - the first Canadian to medal in the CG 10,000 m
Rio is going to be very interesting. Cam's confident now to go for gold
OOOH OOOH OOOHHH OOOHH!!!!
I concur. Great run, but once you've earned the rail on the homestretch you don't ever give it up. This happens far too often @ even the pro level.
Actually, no - he isn't the first Canadian to medal in the event. Paul Williams won bronze in the 10,000 in 1990, and Scotty Rankine placed second in the 6-mile race in both 1934 and 1938.

Three athletes enter the last 100m more or less together. One of them is technically far superior to the other two, has obviously done many, many drills etc. The product of a great deal of top level coaching. Who comes last out of the three? He does! Maybe there is something to be said for simply running in an uninhibited manner and letting rip? Can concentration on form etc. have a detrimental effect on an athletes speed at the finish?
Have you ever thought that the less technical guys may have better endurance. It doesn't matter how technical your sprinting is: you have to have something left after 9, 800m.

He was trying to pull a Shannon Rowbury.

It is easy to say now, but he could feel Betts on his outside shoulder, so if would be expected he'd move out a bit. He was trying to win...not get the silver.
Definitely worth it for the final lap. Brew up a pot of coffee and settle in!
I thought Levins just tied up the last 50 is all. Doesn't matter how good your form is if you're out of gas.
His form has nothing to do with sprint drills. That's his style & always has been. Runs the same in the middle of the race as at the end. He tapped out/cracked with 50m to go. Last 400m splits 15.1, 13.8, 13.2, 13.3(55.4). Kipsiro won it with 12.9.
Fantastic run btw!!

That is not true at all. Athletes always start moving out as runners try to go by on the right shoulder. It works more often than not. The odd time, the runner in 3rd goes by on the inside.
While it's true Cam seemed more deadly while at SUU (see: Payton Jordan 10k), this was also extremely impressive for the following reasons:
1. Pressure. CG >>> Payton Jordan. It makes a huge difference when it comes to how you feel with 2k to go.
2. Race development. CG pace was very uneven whereas PJ is meant to be a time trial with good pacing (which it was).
3. Confidence. Cam was unbeatable in his own mind, and in reality, at SUU. He's experienced a rough patch which has damaged that a bit. To run like this w/o the confidence he once had shows how much of a champion this kid is (which leads me to my next point...)
Now that he is back, mentally, to his 'old' ways expect him to do some NASTY things on the track. I'm talking sub 27/sub 13, etc.

You do realize his PRs are 13:18 and 27:27?
I thought Cam had run 13.15?
Mo Ahmed just ran 13.18. Mo has very little speed and is being coached by one of those lousy (not really but you would think so based on the hype surrounding NOP) College coaches. No doubt that Mo is a marathoner in the future, but while he may not have a last lap kick to match Levins (or many others for that matter), I see him develping the mindset to run hard from farther out than the last 200m - something the NOP people seem unwilling to do.
