Wow is 400k really all you need to be a 1%er? I do not consider those people to be in the same social class as me. I'm going to start referring to myself as a .1%er so i don't get lumped together with those people. I can't even imagine budgeting to live on 400k.
As someone in the $600K range (anesthesiologist 33y) I agree that those above me are certainly in another class. $400K to a M is comfortable but it isn't lavish like a multi-millionaires, especially if you live in SF or NYC.
Wow this thread is a great opportunity for a classic lrc pissing contest.
Note to newcomers: divide everything people say by 2 (at least) and then you'll have your real answers.
I'm a college student, and my income is 0$ a year.
That's the most truthful answer you'll get on this thread.
Yup this place is amazing alright.
Canova says $700K a year is just enough to have some spending cash. It's a starters salary. Probably not enough to build your nest egg but at least sufficient to go out on a Saturday night here and there.

Why a contest? I'm a financial analyst, typical $700,000/yr job on Wall Street. I'm happy with that. I probably make a little less than the radiologist who posted above but should be making a lot more 5 years from now. Either way, no pissing contest, just discussion, that's all.
Back to the original question yes I fit the top 1% by most stats posted but I've read some that state the 99th percentile in America starts above 1MM. Not sure what to believe.

I hear ya, brother!
7 people in this thread have responded with both their job and their salary.
The average is 621k/year.
Haha. Lrc at its finest.

Allow me to bring that average down. Entry level accountant, 60K.

Ditto, I will bring that average down as well. Senior financial analyst, 420k/yr. Wish I were making the big bucks somewhere else.
Is my friend getting low balled? Ortho surgeon finishing fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC and says starting $200-350! Radiologists I know don't make anywhere near 700 but they work 3 wks of the month. Are you working 100 hr weeks and paid base plus RVUs? What part of the country?
Unfunded Grad student. $15,000 from a summer internship vs. $40k in tuition.
I hope to secure a meager wage on graduating; Perhaps $120k would be enough to sustain a humble bachelor's lifestyle, but I'm not afraid to panhandle when times get time.
I don't have a job anymore, been unemployed for almost 8 years now. It's so hard to find work in this economy. Nonetheless I've still managed to pull in 7 figures/year through investing. Low 1,XXX,XXX but still 7 figures.
Surely there must be others who live off their investments and don't work like slaves?

1) NYC and the northeast in general sucks for MDs, flooded job market
2) starting and partner salary are very different in most specialty practices. The average ortho makes more than the average radiologist so don't worry about your friend.
3) I have a pretty hard working job in the SE but I don't work 100 hour weeks. We make profit shares. There is no direct RVU based bonus.
